About Us:
The Ohio Ethics Commission promotes ethics in public service to strengthen the public’s confidence that Government business is conducted with impartiality and integrity. The Commission was established as part of the Ohio Ethics Law in 1973.
The Ethics Law, effective January 1, 1974, created new ethical standards for public officials and employees by: requiring personal financial disclosure; creating new restrictions upon unethical conduct with criminal sanctions; and establishing uniform review of ethics issues by statewide commissions of the three branches of government. The Commission has jurisdiction over Ohio’s Executive Branch that is for all public officials and employees at the state and local levels of government, except legislators, judges, and their staffs.
What You’ll Do:
The Ohio Ethics Commission is seeking an experienced Advisory Staff Attorney to help further its mission to promote ethics in public service and support the day-to-day operation of the agency.
The following duties will be typical for this position. Other duties may be required or assigned:
- Drafts and presents formal and informal advisory opinions for the review and final approval of the Commission.
- Writes staff advisory opinions for review by the Lead Advisory Attorney, the Chief Advisory Attorney, the Executive Director, and/or other Commission staff.
- Reviews, revises, and edits advisory opinions and other materials written by advisory staff.
- Responds to inquiries from the Commission, Commission staff, citizens, government officials, government agencies, and others about the Ohio Ethics Law and related statutes and updates advisory files, records, and logs. Handles telephone calls from filing public officials and employees with respect to financial disclosure filing requirements.
- Answers questions for Commission staff and the public about the financial disclosure law.
- Reviews R.C. 102.04 (D) disqualification filings by public officials and employees
- Attends and participates in Commission and Advisory Committee meetings.
- Prepares charts, opinions, memoranda, statistical information and other advisory section related materials to be presented at the meetings.
- Prepares meeting packet materials and takes meeting notes to be included in the meeting minutes.
- Conducts legal research, prepares legal memoranda, articles, information sheets, and other documents.
- Reviews and edits materials written by other Commission staff as needed. In consultation with other staff members, writes and reviews administrative rules for the Ohio Ethics Commission.
- Presents speeches on Ethics Law and related statutes.
This position starts at Step 1 of the applicable pay range schedule at $29.66/hour and after completion of the probationary period moves to Step 2 at $31.11/hour. The Ohio Ethics Commission operates business 8AM-5PM Monday-Friday and flexible shifts/schedules within those hours may be available. There is opportunity for a hybrid teleworking schedule upon completion of training.

Admission to Ohio Bar pursuant to Section 4705.01 of Revised Code; 6 mos. exp. as licensed attorney. -Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above may be substituted for the experience required, but not for the mandated licensure.
