Description
The Visual and Performing Arts Dept. has several full-time (1.0 FTE), 10 -month vacancies in various Elementary Schools.

The Visual and Performing Arts Department will be adding numerous elementary teaching positions given increased resources from Proposition 28, passed by the voters in November 2022. The Visual and Performing Arts Department believes that the arts transform lives and there is much excitement for expanding arts education in the district. Teachers will be hired to teach 1) performing arts (dance, music and theater) and 2) visual and media arts. These teachers will teach all grades, UTK-5, and will serve multiple sites as an itinerant teacher. A collaborative spirit will be essential for success in this role and teachers should be open to working closely with colleagues in service of continuous growth and development, to include but not limited to lesson study, action research, classroom observations, etc. Above all candidates should have a firmly developed growth mindset and strong belief that every student possesses unique strengths/genius and that all are capable of finding their artistic voice and developing literacy.

Examples of Duties

An Elementary VAPA Teacher develops, implements, and provides feedback on subject matter content that will inform San Diego Unified School District’s Visual and Performing Arts curriculum scope and sequence. The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Presents subject matter according to guidelines established by the Board of Education and administrative regulations.
  • Prepares lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles.
  • Encourages pupils to work both collaboratively and independently to express original ideas and develop novel solutions to real world problems.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is culturally inclusive, anti biased, anti racist, and conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students.
  • Assesses student progress on objectives, expectations, and/or goals and provides feedback to students, parents, and administration, in addition to providing outcomes during the grade reporting period.
  • Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment, including instructional media.
  • Collaborates regularly with arts educator peers.
  • Participates in regular professional learning, growth and development including but not limited to action research.
  • Participates in site specific committees as appropriate.
  • Possesses a well developed growth mindset and commitment to equity.
  • Is willing to learn alongside students and staff and play a role developing each site’s vision and mission related to student centered inquiry and integrated teaching and learning.
  • Works with site staff to understand the arts and the role it plays in developing personal and professional skills and abilities.
  • Creates and maintains a professional working relationship with the students, parents, teachers, administrators, and staff at the various sites.
  • Builds capacity through relational learning inclusive of co-planning, modeling, and co-teaching.
  • Takes part in the development of the annual action plan including: Disaggregating student data, identifying appropriate instructional strategies to assist in addressing student learning needs, defining site achievement targets, and standards based assessments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates must have a Multiple Subject Credential with supplemental authorization to teach dance, music theatre or visual arts (or willingness to obtain a Limited Assignment in dance, music, theatre, or visual arts), or a Single Subject Credential in dance, music, theatre, or visual arts (or willingness to obtain a Limited Assignment in dance, music, theatre, or visual arts) in California or an equivalent out-of-state teaching credential. Candidates eligible for the listed credentials within the next three months must provide evidence from their credentialing program that they will graduate and will be recommended for a credential.

A valid English Language Learner Authorization or willingness to obtain one is also required.

***Desired candidates should also be willing to participate in ongoing training in foundational and ongoing professional learning and action research. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with grade level, site, and district staff in service of site and district goals and an understanding of high functioning Professional Learning Communities with an emphasis on analyzing student work is highly desired.***

Credential must be registered with the California Commission of Teacher Credentialing by the closing date of the application deadline.

Applicants must have a valid California driver’s license and be prepared to conduct, participate in, and travel to sites, professional development sessions, workshops, and meetings.
