The City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department, now also known as Raleigh Water, provides water and sanitary sewer services to about 198,000 metered customers and a service population of about 600,000 people in Raleigh, Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell, and Zebulon areas. Our Water Distribution division is looking for a Maintenance Technicianto join our team. Maintenance Technician are devoted to providing repairs, preventive maintenance, utility locating, and does investigations within our water system. Maintenance Technician also performs maintenance and equipment operation for the City’s distribution system by performing skilled activities in support of maintaining, replacing, and repairing water assets (i.e., services, mains, and fire hydrants, etc.).

Maintenance Technicianwork a rotating after hours call. Pay for being on call (standby) is 8 hours at regular pay. If called back into work, employee is paid at the overtime rate as indicated by policy.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Install’s, replaces, and repairs assets such as water services, mains, fire hydrants, split services, sample stations, and auto flushers
- Required to work after hours on an on-call rotating repair call crew
- Performs semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance supporting City department(s) or maintenance function
- Selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks; performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
- Collects, prepares, and enters system data; creates work orders; logs work activities; update maps; enters account data; compiles and prepares reports; maintains records, files, and work-related documentation
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and two years of maintenance experience related to assignment or experience related to the fields listed below as shown:
- Construction: grading, storm drain, site work, builder, plumber, any utility construction (including fiber installation), road construction
- Landscaping: installer, maintenance, irrigation
- Mechanic: heavy equipment, HVAC, hydraulic systems
- Farming: manual labor, equipment operating
- Moving Company: labor, truck driver
- General Municipal Worker: utility inspector
- Tech School Student: mechanical
- Firefighter: full or part-time
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation
Licensing/Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
- Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or ability to obtain within 45 days of hire.

ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
