The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs is the state’s consumer protection agency. Established in 1974, SCDCA is charged with protecting consumers from inequities in the marketplace through advocacy, mediation, enforcement, and education. With an unrivaled complaint processing portal, an award-winning communications staff, and dedicated staff overseeing more than 120 statutes SCDCA administers and enforces, SCDCA offers invaluable services to every citizen in SC. We’re looking for a dependable, energetic, self-starter with good communication skills to join our agency in providing excellent customer service for staff, consumers, and businesses in our Legal Division.

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF YOUR ROLE
SCDCA’s Legal Division performs the agency’s licensing, administration, and enforcement duties related to the majority of the laws under the agency’s jurisdiction. The individual in this role is responsible for licensing professional employer organizations, continuing care retirement communities, discount medical plan organizations, and physical fitness centers.

DAY-TO-DAY ACTIVITIES

  • Conduct screening of licensing applications in a timely manner to ensure all necessary information is received for processing.
  • Evaluate credentials of applicants, which sometimes includes reviewing financial statements or credit reports to assess financial soundness.
  • Answer routine licensing questions and review sample documents and contracts.
  • Respond to voicemail messages and emails in a timely manner.
  • Provide support as needed to staff including other licensing examiners and attorneys.
  • Contribute to individual quality and productivity goals by meeting standards focused on fulfillment of organizational turnaround time expectations, accuracy, and security.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • A high school degree or GED
  • Professional demeanor and attitude including dress, timeliness, and dependability.
  • Ability to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and deal courteously with the general public and staff.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in interpreting and applying policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Paralegal certification and/or experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to multitask including handling a multi-line phone and working in multiple databases.
  • Ability to plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion according to schedules and goals.
  • Well organized and able to work independently.
  • Some knowledge of state and federal consumer protection laws.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word, as well as hardware devices such as scanners, copiers, and fax machines.
