Job Description
This position serves as a field and laboratory technician of the FWRI research team that conducts biological research related to spiny lobster and the commercial and recreational fisheries. Job duties include leading field teams, maintaining field equipment, data entry, in support of the spiny lobster research program and other marine research programs in South Florida.. Specific duties include:

  • Organizing and leading activities in the field and laboratory. Underwater data collection requires participation in SCUBA diving
  • Implementing projects and providing high quality information on lobster biology and lobster fisheries management.
  • Managing and entering data collected from the program’s field and laboratory projects using computer databases and software.
  • Support the preparation of scientific technical reports, manuscripts, project summaries, presentations, and other products suitable for the entire range of stakeholder interests.
  • Operate research vehicles and vessels including towing trailers.

Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree with a major in one of the biological sciences and one years of professional experience from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences. Must possess SCUBA diving certification.

Preferred Education and Experience

A bachelor’s degree and with a major in one of marine biological, fisheries, or ecological sciences and one-year professional work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques used in scientific research, experimental design, and statistical analysis of fisheries data.
  • Skilled in the use of personal computers and associated database, spreadsheet, presentation software.
  • Skilled in the use of scientific laboratory and field equipment.
  • Ability to identify marine flora and fauna that occur in the Florida Keys.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner, understand, review, and apply rules, regulations, polices, and procedures related to fishery resource management, present scientific methods and results to scientific and nonscientific audiences.
  • Ability to perform strenuous field duties under potentially adverse weather conditions and to establish and effective working relationship with co-workers and colleagues and the agency’s stakeholders.
  • Must be certified SCUBA diver and be able to qualify as a FWRI/AAUS certified diver which includes the ability to pass a swim test and a medical evaluation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely trailer and operate vessels up to 26 feet in length and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment up to 50 pounds, endure long work hours, and extensive periods of time in the field.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS:

Valid Florida driver’s license required.

SCUBA diver certification required.
