Stanford University Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Division of Thoracic Surgery is seeking a 1 year Fixed term, Research Data Analyst 1, to manage and analyze large amounts of information, perform abstraction of data elements from the electronic medical records to be used for clinical research. The primary role is to review electronic health records, abstract specific information from the patient’s chart and enter the information into a web-based data collection tool.
Duties include:
- Collect, manage and clean datasets.
- Create databases and reports, develop algorithms and statistical models, and perform statistical analyses appropriate to data and reporting requirements.
- Use system reports and analyses to identify potentially problematic data, make corrections, and determine root cause for data problems from input errors or inadequate field edits, and suggest possible solutions.
- Develop reports, charts, graphs and tables for use by investigators and for publication and presentation.
- Analyze data processes in documentation.
- Collaborate with faculty and research staff on data collection and analysis methods.
- Provide documentation based on audit and reporting criteria to investigators and research staff.
- Read and review individual medical records to identify required information, including demographics, disease-specific topics, and radiology findings from imaging reports and physician notes.
- Read and comprehend clinical information to make informed abstraction decisions.
- Accurately enter data into database as specified.
- Determine and negotiate the validity of the abstracted data and question controversial information prior to data entry.
- Consistently meet or exceed productivity and accuracy standards established by the primary research supervisor.
- Solve problems with regard to unique record or process issues.

The expected pay range for this position is $64,480. to $93,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in a clinical hospital/medical setting is preferred (ie, medical scribe, EMT, physician, medical student, nursing)
- Must be able to carry out routine tasks after direction from PI. Must be able to work independently to prioritize tasks and determine when supervisor assistance or notification is required. Responsible for liaising with PI and research staff on study related issues. Responsible for coordinating with PI and other research staff in ensuring that study related tasks are completed and by planned internal deadlines, and work in coordination with staff to identify and address issues that arise related to the studies.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as medicine, economics, finance, statistics or engineering.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
- Substantial experience with MS Office and analytical programs.
- Strong writing and analytical skills.
- Ability to prioritize workload.
- General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.
- Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve work.
- Ability to maintain detailed records of data and outcomes.
- General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
- Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
- Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
- Sitting in place at computer for long periods of time with extensive keyboarding/dexterity.
- Occasionally use a telephone.
- Rarely writing by hand.
