Research Data Analyst 1, S-SPIRE (U.S. – Flexible Work Location)

The following position will have the flexibility to be based anywhere in the U.S., for candidates who are willing to travel to the Stanford School of Medicine campus and/or the Palo Alto VA 10% to 15% of the time.

The Department of Surgery at Stanford University is launching the Veterans Impact Lab (VIP), in collaboration with the Palo Alto VA. The Research Data Analyst will support this new Lab. The VIP is focused on estimating the causal impact of policies and programs in VA and on veterans.

We are seeking a Research Data Analyst 1 to manage and analyze large amounts of information, typically technical or scientific in nature, under the direction of project researchers, investigators, or managers.

Our interdisciplinary team includes clinical and research faculty with expertise in implementation science, health economics, bioinformatics, and quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methodologies.

Duties include:

  • Collect, manage, and clean large health care datasets.
  • Employ new and existing tools to interpret, analyze, and visualize multivariate relationships in data.
  • Create databases and reports, develop algorithms and statistical models, and perform statistical analyses appropriate to data and reporting requirements.
  • Use system reports and analyses to identify potentially problematic data, make corrections, and determine root cause for data problems from input errors or inadequate field edits, and suggest possible solutions.
  • Develop reports, charts, graphs, and tables for use by investigators and for publication and presentation.
  • Collaborate with faculty and research staff on data collection and analysis methods. This includes the ability to participate in writing papers for submission to peer reviewed journals.
  • Provide documentation based on audit and reporting criteria to investigators and research staff.
  • Communicate with government officials, grant agencies and industry representatives.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • We desire candidates who have a background in economics, statistics, or related field, where they were exposed to causal inference techniques.
  • Experience using Stata or R is a plus.
  • Experience using SAS is a plus.
  • Experience using SQL is a plus.
  • Experience working with large, complex data is desired.
  • Must be highly organized and demonstrate exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Previous work experience in an academic institution, or academic hospital setting preferred.
  • Interdisciplinary foci, such as public policy, is also possible with coursework in economics and data science.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics or engineering.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Substantial experience with MS Office and analytical programs.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Sitting in place at computer for long periods of time with extensive keyboarding/dexterity.
  • Occasionally use a telephone.
  • Rarely writing by hand.

This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five regional pay structures. The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate. The expected pay range for this position is $53,000 to $97,000 per annum.
