Job Summary: The Research Engineer uses fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of a particular field of specialization to perform varied scientific research requiring application and adaptation of established techniques, procedures, and criteria. Will evaluate, select, and apply standard scientific techniques, procedures, and criteria to accomplish a variety of research assignments. May be involved in various research projects to include conducting experiments, writing research proposals, writing technical papers and research reports.

Additional Department Summary: The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alabama is seeking candidates for a Project Manager/ Research Engineer position. Applicants will be expected to work with the PI and Co-PIs of an awarded NSF Convergence Accelerator grant on project management, including participating the convergence accelerator curriculum, coordinating research activities of participating institutions, organizing regular meetings within the team and related stakeholders.

The project manager will also assist the PI to supervise experiments in the laboratories, train students in the use of instruments, and help design, construct, and operate the experimental setups. Continued education and/or training will be required in order to remain proficient and up to date with the state-of-the-art technology to support this leading edge research.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field based on the area of research and three years of experience; OR Master’s degree in an appropriate field based on the area of research and one (1) year of experience.

Skills and Knowledge: The ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students. Strong English writing and speaking skills. Self-motivated, responsible and enthusiastic personality.

Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or other relevant fields. Experience with manufacturing of ready-mix concrete and/or precast concrete. Experience with project management and research.
