Risk Management Internship
Washington Cities Insurance Authority (WCIA) is a municipal organization of cities, towns and interlocal government entities in Washington State that join together for the purpose of providing liability and property protection to its member entities. WCIA provides members with comprehensive liability coverage (auto, general, police, public officials, and errors & omissions), equipment breakdown, crime & fidelity, property and auto physical damage. WCIA also provides risk management services to reduce the amount and frequency of member losses and to decrease the cost incurred by members in the handling and litigation of claims.
WCIA is recruiting qualified students interested in pursuing their knowledge in the risk management, public risk pooling/insurance field while gaining a broad perspective of public property and casualty exposures facing local governments. During the program the individual will work closely and rotate through WCIA’s key Departments: Risk Management, Claims, Underwriting/Insurance Services, and Member Services Department. The individual will get the opportunity to assist Senior Risk Management Representatives with annual field visits and liability best practice audits associated with local government exposures ranging from Police, Special Events, Fleet and other unique exposures. The hiring level is entry level students seeking a career in risk management or the insurance industry. Responsibilities include conducting loss analysis, evaluating public liability loss exposures and recommending controls, organizing data, working on claim forms by type of loss and looking to correct previous data entry issues. The individual should be a creative thinker, problem solver, skilled with Microsoft Office products, strong presenter with the ability to communicate confidently with senior level leaders and a desire to learn. The intern will need to develop a broad understanding of the liability loss environment facing local government agencies. The individual will become familiar with WCIA’s risk management information system, Origami, and assist in analyzing the membership’s reported $16 billion worth of scheduled properties insured by WCIA and analyze loss data for frequency and severity issues.
Job Location: Hybrid work arrangement, with approximately one to two days per month at our Tukwila, WA office and other days working remotely from your Washington residence or traveling to members across the State of Washington.
Position Salary Range: $20 per hour , 40 hours per week, expected to last for three months

Candidate must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, good organizational ability, and be able to build positive working relationship with the membership. The individual that we are seeking must be customer focused, analytical, able to multi-task, and have good time management skills. Degree or pursuing a degree in loss control/risk management, occupational safety, insurance, finance or related field. Strong computer skills also preferred. Regular day and an occasional overnight travel may be required. Valid Washington State Driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
