Description
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is a leader in historic preservation and manages a number of museums, historic sites, and programs that celebrate Prince George’s County’s rich history. Coordinated by the Natural and Historic Resources Division (NHRD), there are 5, M-NCPPC historic house museums that are open to the public, including the Riversdale House Museum.

Riversdale, a National Historic Landmark and designated NPS Network to Freedom Site, seeks a dynamic and organized Museum Specialist/Operations Manager to join our team. Constructed between 1801-1807, Riversdale interprets life in 19th Century Maryland, inclusive of the shared history of the Stier, Calvert and Plummer families. Rich in primary source material, the Museum is undergoing a transformation by expanding its interpretation to be more inclusive of the lives and labor of the enslaved, indentured, and free Black community at this historic site and creating a more descendant driven and visitor centered experience.

The successful candidate will serve as the lead historic specialist, manage daily museum operations, and collaborate on the development of improvements to the museum’s facilities and offerings to enhance accessibility and the overall visitor experience. An outstanding incumbent will have knowledge of, and coursework in, both American and African American History. In addition, the candidate will need to demonstrate the Division’s strategic pillars listed below in their professional work:

Budgeted salary range $49,361.00 – $68, 390.00 annually

Examples of Important Duties
Public Programming, Events, and Outreach

  • Develops, organizes, and coordinates history-related public programs/events. Also coordinates other special public events.
  • Assist with installation and de-installation of permanent and temporary exhibits in gallery space and period rooms
  • Support collections maintenance tasks, such as moving, cleaning, and storage of collections items
  • Represents the museum at Commission events.
  • Encourages and supports team members to develop and implement public programs.
  • Leads team in planning and delivering education programs, including grades K-12, groups of students and adults with special needs, area teachers, and college and university classes.
  • Assisting with school field trip programs in the Spring and Fall.
  • Works closely with the volunteer coordinator to recruit and train volunteers.
  • Works with other groups/agencies to coordinate programming. When appropriate, facilitates use of the site by community groups.
  • Responds to visitor, telephone, and staff inquiries concerning historic and related subjects. Makes program reservations, collects fees, and arranges facility rentals.

Operations/Administration

  • Responsible for facility maintenance, inspections, and reports. Schedules routine and special service of building and related systems including fire and security alarms, HVAC systems, extermination, and other outside companies.
  • Monitors building utility systems and working with managers to arrange maintenance and repair when needed.
  • Works to prevent workplace accidents and promotes health and safety awareness, including the completion of incident reports when necessary; adherence to all museum and M-NCPPC policies.
  • Models excellent customer service for the team and ensures that museum policies are followed.
  • Opens and closes the museum each day.
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection of staff.
  • Instructs staff in procedures and technical aspects of work.
  • Schedules part-time staff to provide adequate coverage for both day-to-day operations and special events and programs.
  • Assists the director in preparing annual reviews of designated staff and supervises interns.
  • Understands financial concepts and reports, including purchasing and petty cash.
  • Assists with the evaluation of museum operations including the implementation of visitor surveys and other data collection.
  • Keeps up to date on Commission programs, proper museum management, and assisting other team members when help is needed.
  • Participates in Commission/Division committees as assigned as well as meetings, conferences, and training sessions.
  • Assists with marketing/advertising outreach, including oversight of social media, Constant Contact, and the Riversdale website. Also supervises preparation of marketing materials such as press releases, flyers, mailers, and on-line calendars.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Museum Studies, Museum Education, Museum Management or administration, or related field
  • Demonstrated coursework in African American History or African American Studies
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience, including two years as a program coordinator or supervisor; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2-5 years’ experience in community engagement
  • Education and/or work experience involving guest services, museum interpretation, management, and/or sales

Specialized Skills:

  • Knowledge of and skills in using Commission and museum-related software (Microsoft Suite, Avaya, Xerox Workstation, Kronos, Samaritan, ParksDirect, OneDrive, Dropbox, EAM, ERP, PhotoShop, Canva, NeoGov, PastPerfect).
  • Goal-oriented and dedicated to innovative ideas and achieving success through diversity.
  • Communicating in a pleasant, positive, and professional manner to Commission employees, museum staff and volunteers, and the general public at all times.
  • Ability to be flexible and professional in dealing with programs, staff, and visitors.
  • Ability to interact positively with museum volunteers and to offer advice and constructive instructions for the improvement of tour programs and special projects.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in history, American studies, museum studies, archaeology, education, historic preservation, or a related field; and

2. One year of related experience; or

3. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

4. Valid driver’s license, or the ability to acquire one.
