DESCRIPTION

The Nurse Manager is responsible for providing administrative and clinical leadership, with 24/7 responsibility for staffing and operational oversight for La Jolla Special Procedures, Motility, and GI endoscopy practice at Koman Outpatient Pavilion. These are busy units serving both inpatient and outpatient populations. The Nurse Manager will provide frontline supervision of daily operations. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: ensures the effective utilization of resources; provides excellent customer service; complies with regulatory and internal UCSD requirements, provides support for the physicians in their practices; provides hands-on clinical support for the nurses and staff when needed; and optimizes the overall efficiency and functioning of the unit.

Also, the Nurse Manager is responsible for: Quality Improvement, Staff Engagement, and Strategic Planning. Develops/integrates annual operational, capital and personnel budget in collaboration with the Department of Finance and performs other related tasks as required. This position facilitates an atmosphere of interactive management and the development of collegial relationships among nursing personnel and other healthcare staff and faculty. A key responsibility of this position is to foster effective communication and teamwork and to promote a high functioning productive team in a supportive work environment.

This position assumes HR responsibilities of directly supervising staff, ensuring staff competence, evaluating staff, counseling staff including disciplinary actions, screening potential new hires, assisting with the interviewing and hiring of new employees, and effectively interfacing with both faculty physicians and divisional physician leadership. This position works collaboratively with the Assistant Nursing Director, Director, Division Chief, and Clinical Service Chief to ensure safe, effective, timely, and high quality care delivery and operational excellence.

This position has a direct reporting relationship to the Associate Nursing Director of Procedural Services. Spends the majority of time (50% or more) achieving organizational objectives through the coordinated achievements of subordinate staff. Establishes departmental goals and objectives, functions with autonomy. Manages the accountability and stewardship of human, financial, and often physical resources in compliance with departmental and organizational goals and objectives.

Ensures subordinate supervisors and professionals adhere to defined internal controls. Manages systems and procedures to protect departmental assets. Manages nursing and administrative operations in specific patient care areas. Implements changes to patient workflows and operational processes. Maintains 24 hour line management responsibility for the administration of fiscal, material and human resources. Direct reports are typically supervisor level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Nursing required.
  • RN license issued by the State of California.
  • Current ART certification, or BLS and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six months of hire date.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of recent related healthcare experience, including at least three (3) years of RN experience in procedural, ED, or ICU.
  • Minimum two (2) years working in a supervisory or management level position in a healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrated hospital management skills, with progressive expertise in patient care services.
  • Knowledge to manage disaster incidents, sentinel events and ability to problem solve with critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes.
  • Proven knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments.
  • Ability to perform triage and handle critical and/or urgent situations with accuracy, expediency, and tact.
  • Must have excellent skills to communicate and influence effectively with all levels of staff, physicians, patients and external constituents, both verbally and in writing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) or health related field.
  • Certification in relevant area.
  • GI or other procedural experience highly preferred.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $92,600 – $232,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $44.35 – $111.21

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
