Safety (HSE) Intern Year-round On-campus

Engie North America located in Iowa City at the University of Iowa Campus. Will be offering training and employment opportunities to result-oriented occupational & environmental health majors who have strong communication skills, with initiative, and high personal standards that are interested in working to create an innovate and creative team environment. The position will provide support to the Site Safety Specialist. Engie Generation NA is responsible for the infrastructure that supplies the University Campuses and Hospital with steam, power, water and chilled water.

What you’ll do:

Student employee will assist in in all aspects of the ENGIE Health & Safety Program including, but not limited to:

  • Assists with incident investigation and monthly indicator reporting
  • Review and disposition of safety Good Catch reports
  • Identifying of potential hazards within the work environment
  • Participate in leadership safety walks
  • Employee training
  • Capital Improvement project risk assessment and consultation

Student employee will also be trained for:

  • Identification and use of personal protective equipment
  • Leading by example and take ownership of identified issues
  • Seizing opportunities to learn by participating in or shadowing activities to increase understanding
  • Facilitating at least one safety improvement projects aimed at closing the risk gap and/or cultivating a positive safety culture
  • Implement action items as they relate to improvements identified in leadership safety walks
  • Students employees will be encouraged to work independently when possible
  • Asks “why”, is open-minded, and challenges the status quo
  • Leads and supports changes for the sake of improvement
  • Generate new ideas and enthusiasm in our pursuit of safety excellence
  • Other duties as assigned

What you bring:

  • Student must be enrolled at the University of Iowa
  • Prefer students from the Occupational & Environmental Health program within the College of Public Health

  • Ability to meet highest attendance requirements
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy
  • May involve some lifting
  • Ability to use personal computer, calculator, and work with standard software applications
  • Must be able to detect and understand audible alarms, detect changes in noise levels of rotating equipment and portable radio communication
  • Capable of frequently standing; walking; balancing; sitting; climbing (ladders, stairs, ramps, catwalks and the like as required); kneeling; pushing; pulling; lifting
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to half and full-face respirators, fall protection equipment, hardhat, safety shoes, safety glasses
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to extreme environmental conditions – heat, cold, humidity, noise, dust
