Lead 3D Designer (Digital and Clay)

What you’ll do
Lead designers must have expert experience in their field. They must have in-depth knowledge of design process and what it takes to bring a car from sketch to reality. They must utilize all design skill sets to create quality proposals of their own as well as guiding and mentoring others in parallel. A proactive personality is required to effectively lead single or multiple design programs.

Main Tasks

  • Propose innovative and world class design solutions which push the future development of the Volvo Brand
  • Create compelling 3D models for concept and production car programs in the form of 3D digital models and 3D clay models
  • Collaborate cross functionally with all team disciplines
  • Support program timing by delivering appropriate design proposals with speed and efficiency
  • Mentoring younger designers in parallel to your own work

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality designs through 3D mediums
  • Support Designers in the creation of digital models, physical models and CG renderings
  • Availability in studio when clay models are in process. This role requires clay modeling experience as the Lead 3D Designer is expected to spearhead these efforts
  • Work on a broad range of advanced design and production programs
  • Presenting and communicating design proposals using multiple medias
  • Work with other designers to help bring their ideations to life in 3D (interns included)
  • Organize and run design reviews on a regular basis as the lead role with connection to Sweden
  • Collaborate with studio engineering on design solutions that can be brought to production
  • Review portfolios for interns and other positions when required

Qualifications

  • Highly skilled in both digital 3D modeling and clay modeling
  • Express a high level of creativity through visual communication skills including: digital rendering, 3D Tape drawing and surface knowledge
  • Expert skills in Alias Automotive Studio, Cinema 4d, Rhino, and Blender experience preferred
  • Skills in VRed, VR, Photoshop, PPT and other visual medias
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues across the organization, as well as internal teams
  • Expert knowledge of design quality, themes, proportions and surface execution
  • Expert level or storytelling, organization skills and presentation skills both verbally and in graphic form
  • Interview and scouting skills for both potential designers/modellers, and interns
  • 5-10 years’ experience in the field of automotive design, including at least five years of experience in digital modeling and 10 years of experience in Clay modeling

SALARY & BENEFITS:

The compensation for this position ranges from $120,000 – 160,000 (annually). The rate of pay offered will be dependent upon candidate’s relevant skills and experience. In addition, there is a bonus opportunity, comprehensive benefits package including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement plan with employer contribution and employee lease program.
