SCENE TCHN AST (Assistant Stage Technician)

Department Description Department Purpose

May be assigned to one or more specialty areas based on experience as follows:

Audio – Under direction of the Head Audio Engineer or a designated audio lead, set up and strike audio equipment from supplied stage plots and diagrams. Operate audio consoles for performances and events under supervision, as needed. Work directly with touring musicians and artists. Detect, diagnose, and resolve audio problems. Act as a deck audio technician and assist other audio engineers.

Lighting – Under direction of the Master Electrician or a designated electrics lead, hang, focus, operate, and strike professional lighting equipment. Act as a deck electrician or light board programmer and operator during events and performances. Focus lighting from Genie personnel lifts, catwalks, and other limited access locations. Work directly with touring technicians and designers. Detect, diagnose, and resolve problems with lighting equipment.

Carpentry/Rigging – Under direction of the Master Carpenter or a designated head flyperson, act as a flyperson in Jackson Hall using a manual counterweight rigging system. Assist with the moving of drapery and scenery. Assist with rigging in both Jackson Hall and the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre as needed. Lead and oversee stage set-ups, including riser construction and scenery assembly.

Video- Under direction of the Master Electrician or a designated video lead, set up, operate, and strike professional-grade projection and image-processing systems and projection screens.

Wardrobe – Under direction of the Master Carpenter or a designated wardrobe lead, act as dresser. Assist with offstage quick changes. Make major or minor sewing repairs. Correctly use laundry and wardrobe equipment, including but not limited to washers, dryers, irons and steamers.

Job Summary

Under close supervision from Production Department staff and designated crew leaders, assist in backstage operations as needed, including set up, operation, and strike of theatrical lighting, sound, video, scenery, and rigging equipment for MC events and performances. Perform event and stage set-ups and strikes based on supplied diagrams, including but not limited to performances, banquets, conference events, and receptions. Interact directly and professionally with local and traveling artists and clients to ensure their needs are met. Maintain a positive working environment and high standards of safety, craftsmanship, and efficiency. These are limited appointment positions with less than 1,000 total working hours. These positions have the possibility of extension, but will not convert to career status. Hours of work are scheduled sporadically as Mondavi Center’s events schedule dictates.

The position supports the strategic goals of the unit through leading technical crews in one or more specialty area including student employees and contributing to the Production Department overall, actions that are essential to the continued operation and success of the MC.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Repeatedly lift and move theatrical equipment weighing up to 65 pounds utilizing safe lifting and moving techniques in preparation for performances.
• Push/pull theatrical equipment weighing up to 1,200 pounds utilizing safe pushing and pulling techniques.
• Detect audio and visual problems during rehearsals and performances. Ascend and descend narrow ladders between floors backstage.
• Work on ladders, personnel lifts, catwalks, loading bridges, and theatrical grids up to 100′ above the stage floor.
• Work in low-light areas and/or areas of restricted physical access. Operate electrical or sound equipment under supervision.

• Work is scheduled on an as-needed basis in response to scheduled performances and events.
• Work overtime, including evenings/nights, weekends, and holidays, usually on short notice to staff events.
• Work afternoon/evening split shifts.
• Work is generally performed indoors, but occasionally will be performed outdoors.
• Occasionally work in areas where hazardous materials (spray paint or cleansers) are present.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Apprentice-level experience in technical theatre or stage production in at least one of the following disciplines: Audio, Lighting, Rigging/Carpentry or Video.
  • Knowledge of and skills to utilize technical theatrical equipment, including stage lighting, amplified sound and stage equipment, and stage rigging and counterweight systems. Skills using power and hand tools.
  • Customer service and communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience using power and hand tools.
• Skills to assist in resolving event details, issues, and/or problems.
• Skills to organize and lead student stage crew.
• Ability to learn and use the MC scheduling software.
