POSITION: Scenery Technician

DEPARTMENT: Scenery

CLASSIFICATION: Full time/ Hourly/ Non- Exempt

SUPERVISOR: Scenery Director

COMPENSATION: Minimum $18/hr

OVERVIEW

Founded in 1947 by Nina Vance, the Alley Theatre is a pioneer of regional theatre, and one of the leading nonprofit theatre companies in the United States. The Alley has been awarded the prestigious Regional Theatre Tony Award and the Texas Medal of Arts Award. The Alley has transferred productions to Broadway, Off-Broadway, major European Festivals, and to 40 American cities. Unique among regional theatres, the Alley is committed to maintaining a Resident Acting Company and providing them with work year-round. Nationally recognized directors, actors, playwrights, and designers from across the country have regularly joined the Resident Acting Company.

JOB STATEMENT

A Scenery Technician is responsible for the construction and installation of all scenery using a variety of methods and materials as assigned.

JOB DUTIES

  • Perform all duties and projects as assigned by the Scenery Director and/or Construction Charge.
  • Construction of scenic pieces in wood, metal, plastic, and other materials.
  • Develop a complete and thorough understanding of construction drawings and paperwork for each production as assigned.
  • Actively participate in all builds, strikes and load-ins for each production.
  • Participate in the daily cleaning and maintenance of the scene shop and its equipment.
  • Help implement and practice safety policies in the scene shop.
  • The Scenery Technician will maintain all hand tools distributed to them as outlined in the Scene Shop Policy Manual.
  • Represent the theatre’s technical resources as required by the Production Manager for theatre programs including, but not limited to special events, education, and community outreach programs, building rentals, and other non-Alley building functions.
  • Act in concert with the theatre’s safety policies.
  • Actively engage in education and development of anti-oppressive & inclusive practices and policies in the scene shop and theatre wide.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS (SKILLS and KNOWLEDGE):

  • Construction experience. The ideal candidate has skills in some of the following areas:
    • Woodworking, framing, finishing carpentry.
    • Metal working, welding, bending.
    • Soft goods, sewing skills.
    • Small motors, mechanisms, and electronics.
    • Pneumatics, Hydraulics.
  • Training in safe operation of stationery and portable power tools and hand tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret working drawings.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in theatrical construction techniques.
  • Knowledge of standard and safe rigging practices.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, energized and quickly changing environment.
  • Capacity to solve problems and engage in creative thinking about challenges.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work independently and as a team player.
  • Detail oriented, able to prioritize efficiently and multi-task in situations which may have definite timelines.
  • Understanding of historical and institutional racism in the American theatre, or a commitment to learning, and to be a part of Alley Theatre’s efforts to be an anti-racist organization.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Prolonged periods of standing at worktable.
  • Be able to routinely lift 30 to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work at heights up to 65 feet.
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where directions and priorities can change rapidly.
  • Typical hours are during the day, but the position requires flexibility to be available for weekend, holidays and evening work hours as needed.
