POSITION DESCRIPTION

The safe and expedient transportation of students to and from school, field trips, athletic events and other activities as needed. To build cooperatrive relationships between children, parents, teachers and administrators that will foster a positive relationship among all involved. To provide professional transportation to all students, including those with special needs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The following statements of duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of all personnel within this position.

  • Safely transport students to and from school, field trips and athletic events.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of driving, safety, laws and courtesy as they pertain to student transportation.
  • Ability to maintain effective behavior management systems over different age groups of students.
  • Attendance at and implementation of in-service training and safety meetings as required by State Motor Vehicle Law.
  • Ability to transport and manage students with special needs including the ability to operate adaptive transportation lifts to board and discharge passengers.
  • Maintain, read and understand route sheets and maps, including notifying supervisor/dispatch of any time or route changes.
  • Implement emergency procedures when appropriate.
  • Ability to operate two way radios in compliance with district procedures.
  • Inspect vehicles for daily usage and correctly complete DVIR report before and after each trip.
  • Properly care for vehicles and equipment.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of driving and safety laws.
  • Knowledge of proper loading and unloading procedures, railroad crossings, accidents, medical emergencies, and emergency evacuations.
  • Strong ability to problem-solve.
  • Ability to remain calm under stressful situations.
  • Effective communication skills, demonstrate writing skills to be able to complete assigned forms and reports.
  • Maintain good hygiene and professional appearance.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Maintain good work habits through low absenteeism and efficient time management.
  • Remain current with the best practices for student transportation.
  • Ability to safely and expeditiously evacuate students from bus in the event of an emergency.
  • Ability to understand and be sensitive to the needs of all students.
  • Ability to drive all buses within the fleet.

REQUIRED PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

  • Ability to work through seasonal changes, temperature and different environmental conditions.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to dust, traffic fumes and high noise levels, both in and out of the vehicle.
  • Physical ability to climb in and out of a school bus, to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 30 pounds.
  • Ability to perform repeated bending motion at the knees and waist.
  • Ability to deal with stressful situations.
  • Ability to pass random and for-cause drug and alcohol testing when required.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Meet the requirements of a US DOT or State of Connecticut DMV physical examination.
  • Satisfactory driving record.
  • Clear criminal history background.
  • Must meet the federal physical standards as defined under 49 CFR Section 391.41

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

  • Valid Connecticut Commercial Driver’s License (CDLB) with proper endorsements (S & P required) and classifications.
