School Liaison

The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of New York City’s children and families by providing child welfare, juvenile justice, and early care services. In child welfare, ACS contracts with private nonprofit organizations to support and stabilize families at risk of a crisis through preventive services and provides foster care services for children not able to safely remain at home.

Under general supervision, with wide latitude for independent action and decision, the Close to Home School Operations Liaison are directly responsible to ensuring that youth’s safety and security as well as assessing public safety are being met. This position carries significant responsibilities for collaborating with Assistant Principals, School counselors, Transition Specialist, Social workers to track educational assessment and ensure appropriate placement of youth. The scope includes:
• Troubleshoot matters involving youth that are gang involved by providing technical assistance and support to agency providers and consult with providers about making programmatic adjustments.
• Coordinate immediate conflict mediation efforts across DYFJ through individual support and structured group activities.
• Collaborate with NSP, LSP Facility Directors and Assistant Principals to create safety plans and strategies and methods to reduce behavioral incidents in the school.
• Oversee the provider agency and the day to day operations at our school sites throughout Brooklyn and the Bronx.
• Coordinate the development implementation of programming events at DOE district 79 Passages Schools, trips, tournaments, after school programming, teambuilding and health and fitness activities and other offsite events, including safety and security logistics.
• Coordinate trainings for provider agency staff on how to manage conflict and youth behavior safely including how to use de-escalation and restraint techniques.
• Perform safety and security checks in schools pertaining to youth movement and transitions and crisis intervention.
• Conduct site visits at provider agency sites to respond to incidents and emergent issues that may impact the schools.
• Collaborate with other DYFJ NSD staff to promote safe operations at the schools that have mixed populations of youth in placement.
• Coordinate with other divisions within ACS to track and record unusual incidents and follow up with the youth and the provider as necessary.
• Work with DOE, other OYFD staff and the ACS Education Unit to ensure that the youth earn the credits.
• Prepare and maintain daily school reports, logbooks, statistical data, incident reports, and other information necessary to ensure the quality of the program.
• Assist provider agency with transporting youth to their community school as the need arise.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in “1” above.
