Position Title: Youth Advocate (SUN Youth Advocate/SSSES)

Location: SUN Region 5

Reports To: Program Manager

General Function:

Under the general supervision of the Program Manager, the School Youth Advocate is responsible for case management support for assigned students and long-term visioning and quality of the SUN School Youth Advocacy program in Region 5. This position supports students in 4 schools in the Centennial and Gresham Barlow School District, from grades 5-12. In this position, the School Youth Advocate will have regular contact with youth and families to support their academic success, social emotional development, and assist in meeting basic needs for families.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct case management support to students and families to ensure students are meeting benchmarks for success
  • Attention to detail in recording case notes and case management tracking
  • Regular communication with youth and parents/guardians
  • Tracking of receipts for purchases made for the program
  • Compiling and disseminating program and MFS information, data collection and writing and submitting required progress reports
  • Develop and maintain strong and positive relationships with school staff and administrators
  • Demonstrate positive behavior for students, school staff and families
  • Market the program to students and families and recruit student participants
  • Provide information and assist with linkage to broader community and social service resources, including those in the SUN Service System
  • Meet regularly with school staff and appropriate community providers
  • Possess excellent behavior management skills
  • Experience with Social Emotional Learning concepts and practices
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with a broad range of individuals and groups
  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize, plan and organize

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Minimum of two years of experience in youth development
  • Experience in managing budgets
  • Experience in supervision of staff and volunteers
  • General understanding of employment laws, rules and regulations
  • Experience in developing and supervision of academic enrichment, mentoring, and/or recreational programs
  • Experience working in a public school setting
  • Experience working in collaboration with a variety of agencies and programs
  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate with other MFS Program Coordinators
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of individuals and groups

Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of a BA or BS in public service, recreation or human services related field; MSW or MA preferred or equivalent related experience
  • Experience working in school based academic enrichment, recreation or social services programming is preferred
  • Fluency and ability to communicate effectively in languages in addition to English is beneficial

Other Requirements:

Personal transportation allowing for travel within the Portland Metropolitan area in a timely manner. If driving a personal vehicle must maintain a valid driver license for the state of residency, personal auto liability insurance coverage and a driving record permitting coverage under the agency auto liability policy.

MFS requires all employees and volunteers to complete a criminal background check. We review the results of all background checks individually and consider all of the circumstances of any issues that arise in a background check during the hiring process.

Work Environment:

Work is normally performed in a school and office environment and/or at other locations as deemed necessary. This position will be driving to multiple sites to meet with students and families. May require occasional early morning, weekend or evening work. Position requires ability to sit for extended periods as well as stand occasionally. Position requires use of computer, telephone, fax machine, copier and may require accessing locations by use of stairs.
