Job Summary:
The science communication assistant will provide communications support to the Tallgrass Prairie and Oak Savanna (TPOS) Fire Science Consortium, one for 15 regional fire science exchanges across the United States. The fire science exchange network is charged with transferring and interpreting information about fire ecology and fire management primarily to the fire management community, as well as policy makers and public audiences such as residents in the wildland-urban interface.
The science communication assistant will work in conjunction with the TPOS coordinator and the Nelson Institute’s strategic communications team to identify project priorities. The assistant will be required to attend a weekly check-in meeting that may be on-site at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
Responsibilities: Develops and drafts communication content and assists in the execution of the communications strategy in support of unit communication goals.
- 15% Monitors reach and effectiveness of communication campaigns, projects, and initiatives
- 30% Plans editorial content according to established goals and objects
- 20% Communicates with stakeholders to verify requests and identify editorial resources
- 30% Writes, edits, and publishes content for various communication projects and marketing platforms to align with strategic initiatives and established communication campaigns
- 5% Provides project management and execution of communications programs, initiatives, and tactical plans

Qualifications:
The science communications assistant must have excellent writing and editing skills. They should also have good office practices and procedures including the ability to organize, prioritize work, deal with multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines. Successful candidates will possess:
Strong oral and written communication skills
Proven writing of complex concepts
A positive attitude and professional demeanor
An attention to detail and strong organizational skills
Experience with social media management including planning, implementation, and evaluation
Experience with visual arts or graphic design
Experience with website management including HTML, CSS, and WordPress
Experience with various software applications needed: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe products including those for multimedia design, photography, video editing, and e-mail applications
Preferred:
Familiarity with fire ecology and natural resource management challenges in the Upper Midwest Corn Belt region
Work Type:
Part Time: 30%
This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
Appointment Type, Duration:
Terminal, 13 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding
Salary:
Minimum $42,600 ANNUAL (12 months)
