GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Science Lab Specialist assists faculty with the preparation and set up of lab experiments. In order to do so, this position must maintain supply and equipment inventory, assist with ordering of chemicals and other supplies for the labs, and assist with the storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals and materials. This position receives general direction from the Division Chair of Math and Sciences and exercises no supervision. NOTE: This is a security sensitive position and an appropriate background investigation will be made on applicants being strongly considered for this position.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Knowledge of: 1. Lab equipment and use of chemicals necessary for chemistry experiments. 2. Lab equipment and materials used in biology-related experiments. 3. Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office Suiter, specifically Word Processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), and databases. 4. Safety guidelines (OSHA). Skills in: 5. Utilizing computers to organize, supervise, work with databases, and use spreadsheets (Excel). Ability to: 6. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 7. Prepare specified chemical solutions and mixtures for chemistry labs. 8. Prepare specified materials for biology-related experiments. 9. Prepare clear and concise reports. 10. Maintain microscopes, and trouble shoot, and do minor repair of equipment. 11. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Restricted-Sustained posture, for prolonged periods; light lifting, some walking, pushing, pulling on a regular basis. Unpleasant Exposure Minor Hazard-Moderate exposure to dust, grease, noise, inclement weather, temperature extremes, and unpleasant but not hazardous odors are present. There is occasional exposure to risk controlled by safety precautions. Frequency and severity are limited.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry or biology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: More than one year of work experience in a science lab environment, including student work, internships, teaching assistance, and/or graduate work.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

Experience: Experience as a lab technician or lab research assistant. Experience in an educational setting. Training in safety, OSHA, and management.
