Job Summary
Job Summary: Assist in the development, coordination, and implementation of retention initiatives, academic advising, and other related services, including implementing programs to increase STEM student enrollment and ensure STEM fields student success.
Program Description:
The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is partnering with El Paso Community College (EPCC) to foster success for Hispanic and low-income students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The effort will provide students with innovative and effective instruction, high-quality support resources, and a simplified mechanism for those looking to transfer from EPCC to UTEP. The initiative is called STEMFUERTE (Fostering Undergraduate Education, Retention and Transfer Environments), focusing on undergraduates who have never attended college before their enrollment at EPCC or UTEP.
Essential Functions
Assist in developing, coordinating, and implementing retention initiatives and increasing student enrollment in the STEM fields programs by working with the STEMFUERTE faculty and the administrative team and providing feedback to students about their academic progress. Advise students on college policies, procedures, and program requirements.
Advise new and current student(s) regarding academic goal setting and career exploration in the STEM fields, and assist them in developing their class schedules.
Maintain knowledge of College Readiness Standards and EPCC and UTEP STEM program requirements, and act as a liaison between students and faculty. Create and maintain a record retention system to document students’ status and progress.
Assist and participate in New Student Orientation, educational seminars, and workshops for students, faculty, and staff on student success strategies.
Assist student(s) in resolving issues that interfere with a student’s academic success by making appropriate referrals to counselors and other support services, departments internally and externally, e.g., career services, tutoring, daycare, mental health, and other similar services.
Provide bilingual (English – Spanish) workshops for local parents of STEM majors and those taking STEM courses to inform families of the varied and lucrative opportunities in STEM careers.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
NOTE: A copy of the transcript reflecting this required education MUST be submitted for consideration and reflect completed coursework and degrees conferred. The candidate must be fully qualified for the position at the time of application.
2. Ability to maintain and foster strong relationships with state agencies and local educational institutions.
3. Effective communication (oral and written) skills.
4. Ability to advise and guide students and stay abreast of trends and best practices regarding student retention.
5. Ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures.
6. Experience with a College or University integrated system (i.e. as Banner).
7. Ability to develop and conduct presentations and training.
8. Strong bilingual (English/ Spanish) skills.
