Summary

The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design is looking for an experienced Sculpture Studio Coordinator to provide technical support, administrative oversight, maintenance, and organization of assigned studio, checkout center, and instructional environments. Responsibilities include the sculpture studio and the metal shop. You will report to the Studio Coordinator Supervisor. You will work onsite at the Penny W. Responsibilities*

  • Technical / Instructional Support 65%
    • You will coordinate the daily operation of assigned studio and instructional environments, including: preparing studios for use by faculty and students; help perform classroom demonstrations as requested; and provide guidance to studio users to ensure the appropriate application of technical processes.
    • You will work cooperatively with other Studio Coordinators to provide productive and cooperative work environments for art and design students and faculty and to find workable solutions for studio needs, as well as strengthen the school’s unified approach to creative work.
  • Management and Oversight of Studio Spaces 30%
    • You will manage and train student workers who serve as studio assistants.
    • You will maintain the physical facilities, equipment, and supplies, including: developing a preventative maintenance program for all studio equipment; maintain an inventory of supplies and related materials; make purchases for studios and classes and the development of procedures; and assist with the development of the facilities and services through researching new technologies,equipment, processes, and materials.
    • You will collaborate with other studio coordinators in supporting and purchasing for shared courses outside of your main studio of responsibility.
    • You will ensure a safe and secure studio environment by following OSEH procedures to maintain safe studio practices; develop and implementing studio use policies; serve as the liaison to other university units and staff; and, overseeing chemical and solvent supplies to ensure safe storage, usage, and disposal; maintain reports on those qualified to use the Studio (students, faculty, visiting artists).
    • You will analyze several courses of action and make independent decisions on matters of significance to meet the different needs of instructors, students, and staff in the studios.
    • You will provide financial oversight of the facilities, including: assisting with planning and purchasing on course supply budgets; collect and record student/lab fees;monitoring expenses; and reconcile monthly statements.
  • Special Projects 5%
    • Assist with school events, activities, and initiatives.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in art/design, or a related field
  • Expertise with the tools associated with wood and metal fabrication, including basic Vector CAM operations including CNC Plasma Cutting and CNC Waterjet.
  • 1+ years of experience with CAD and vector software such as Adobe Illustrator and Fusion 360
  • Knowledge of general accounting and budgeting practices
  • Basic computer experience (spreadsheet, word processing, basic digital image editing and printing)
  • Evidence of ability to work as part of a collaborative team
  • Demonstrated commitment to facilitating a community of creative practitioners
  • Ability to work in an environment undergoing frequent change and improvement.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Advanced degree in art/design or related field
  • Previous experience managing similar sculpture and/or metal fabrication studios
  • Experience operating a foundry, including molding with ceramic shell and gas kiln burnout operations
  • Experience in working cooperatively and collaboratively with faculty and students in a university environment
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures and best practices in studio safety
  • Awareness of and commitment to fostering contemporary creative work cultures and practices.
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Evidence of reliability, punctuality, flexibility; demonstrated commitment to facilitating a community of creative practitioners
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an intensive, fast-paced, diverse environment undergoing frequent change and improvement.
