JOB DESCRIPTION

The Seasonal Custodian and Landscaper works under the general supervision of Department Supervisor and School Lead Custodian. This employee reports to the Lead Custodian of the school. Performs work in three (3) phases during the summer breakdown period.

PLEASE NOTE: HOURS OF WORK ARE 7:30 AM TO 4:00 PM WITH A HALF HOUR UNPAID LUNCH

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The following statements of duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of all personnel within this position.

  • Assist custodial staff in the cleaning of school buildings.
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs and polishes floors.
  • Washes windows, sills, screens, blinds, stairwells, spindles, railings.
  • Dusts woodwork, ceiling diffusers, cleans student desks, restrooms.
  • Replenishes paper supplies, replaces light bulbs and light diffusers.

LANDSCAPE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cleans and polishes stainless steel fixtures, moves furniture, boxes, equipment as needed for our IAQ program.
  • Clean, sweeps and removes debris from flower and brush beds.
  • Rake up and remove fallen twigs and small branches.
  • Edge, trim, weed around walks, patios courtyards, and flower beds.
  • Plant flowers and a variety of plants.
  • Works on flower planter barrels.
  • Shovel and rake mulch on flower beds, and around trees.
  • Orders mulch as needed.
  • Use of wheelbarrow, trash barrel, small planting tools, broom, shovel, spade, rake, and hoe.
  • Familiar with PPE, gloves, proper foot wear and sun lotion.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • May perform additional tasks and duties as requested.
  • November through February: Due to unforeseen weather related conditions (major snow/ice storm) requiring the full-time custodial staff to spend a substantial amount of time working outside on snow removal the employee may be called in to assist in the cleaning of our school buildings.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Each candidate hired for the summer breakdown period must receive the OSHA mandated training checklist with the school lead custodian in order to increase awareness of safety, personal health, and environmental issues. These include the proper use of grounds keeping tools and equipment, chemical safety, worker protection PPE, knowledge of blood borne pathogens and reporting an injury.
  • Building rules and regulations pertaining to “The Safety First Program”.
  • Evacuation routes, fire pull stations and review emergency response procedures. To be signed by the employee and lead custodian.
  • Ability to speak, read, and writes English fluently.

  • Must be physically fit.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to transport 50 pounds of soil or debris in a wheelbarrow.
  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

  • Must Hold a valid State of Connecticut license.
