Summary: The City of Billings, Parks Department seeks a Seasonal Forestry Technician. The purpose of this position is to assist with tree care and maintenance in Billings City Parks.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be 18 years of age, have a valid driver’s license and good driving record. Must have completed High School (or have an equivalent certification). Past employment experience in a related field (tree maintenance, landscaping, weed control, etc.) is preferred.
Employment Period: 2023 summer season (typically April to October)
Pay Rate: $16.50/hour
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist the City Arborist, primarily by serving as a “groundsman,” ensuring a safe working environment for bucket truck work, chipping cut branches and raking to clean up detritus from the work area. Tree maintenance work will include planting, staking, watering, mulching, stump grinding, updating tree inventories and pruning. This position will occasionally be asked to assist the weed abatement crew with mowing, weed whacking and compiling pictures and records of completed assignments and other similar related tasks. This position will also occasionally assist the Invasive Plant Control Technician with cutting and treating, foliar spraying or uprooting invasive shrubs or doing other tasks germane to invasive plant control.
Physical Requirements:
- Able to work safely with power machinery including a wood-chipper, stump grinder, watering trucks, chainsaws, weed whackers and power mowers. Able to use shovels, rakes, stake pounders, hand saws, loppers, and pruning tools.
- Able to work on uneven terrain, sometimes with steep inclines, deep grass, shrubs, and down wood.
- Able to tolerate temperature extremes, wind, and rain and tolerate working in areas with ticks, mosquitoes and exposure to direct sun.
- Some work will require performing repetitive motions for periods of 1/2 hour or longer as well as the ability to do frequent bending at the knees and waist or twisting or turning of the upper body.
- Must be able to occasionally lift and carry items from1 – 50 lbs. and push or pull objects 1 -150 lbs.
Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.
