Primary Purpose
Enforces regulations and provides for the safety of the patrons using the Recreation Center and swimming pool; participates in all cleaning duties including, but not limited to: pool, locker rooms, pool deck and surrounding amenities; teaches all facets of the American Red Cross Swimming Lesson program.
Essential functions

1. Monitors and supervises swimmers to gain compliance with pool and facility safety regulations;
2. Recognizes hazardous situations, minimizes dangers, and prevents accidents or injury;
3. Educates patrons on and enforces pool rules and regulations;
4. Monitors locker rooms, observation deck and sun deck;
5. When not actively guarding, participates in all cleaning duties including, but not limited to, pool, locker rooms, deck and surrounding amenities;
6. Assists with safety and health of the pool and facility as directed;
7. Attends in-service trainings as scheduled;
8. Maintains confidentiality of data and information;
9. Follow all applicable safety rules and regulations;
10. Performs other related functions as otherwise assigned, delegated or required by the Aquatics Supervisor or designee on duty.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:

• Lifeguard procedures and techniques;
• Swimming pool operations.

Ability to:

1. Communicate in an effective, cordial, tactful, and professional manner suitable for the situation while performing activities in which employee must convey spoken instructions to co-workers and members of the general public in order to maintain and develop effective working relationships with clientele;
2. Exercise sound judgment, reasoning and decision making which produce logical and consistent results and outcomes;
3. Be open to change and new information; adapt behavior or work methods in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles; effectively deals with ambiguity;
4. Pass all skills tests within time limits necessary to maintain Red Cross Lifeguard Training and CPR-PR certifications;
5. Represent Sterling Recreation Center and the City of Sterling in a positive responsive manner to the public, fellow employees, volunteers, and supporters;

Physical Requirements:

1. Physical requirements include ability to extend hands(s) and arm(s) in any direction and to reach overhead; pick, pinch, work with fingers and palm as well as whole hand; exert up to fifty (50) pounds of force (e.g. lift to shoulder level); move about on foot to accomplish tasks; bend body downward and forward by bending leg or spine; bend knees to come to rest on knee or knees; climb ladders, ascend or descend stairs; use upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward and to push/pull, lift, move, draw/drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion for extended periods of time. Employee must have and maintain good physical condition and be able to carry out a water rescue.
2. Physical mobility sufficient to negotiate work areas to perform the primary purpose of the position.
3. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate keyboard devices requiring repetitive arm/hand movements.
4. Cognitive ability sufficient to perform and understand and apply simple to complex mathematical concepts.
5. Visual acuity sufficient to perform work which deals largely with preparing reports, driving vehicles and for visual inspection which may involve small parts/defects in equipment.
6. Hearing acuity sufficient to receive, comprehend and understand detailed information through oral communications, telephone conversations, radio traffic, etc., and to make fine discriminations in sounds in order to perform duties safely.

Working Conditions:
Work performed in surroundings in which temperature and contaminants are not normally encountered; hazards are minor and controllable.

Marginal Functions:

1. May work varied schedule including early mornings and evening hours;
2. May assist in special projects as needed or otherwise delegated;

Education and Special Requirements

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR LIFEGUARD:
Education: No education required; minimum age of 15 years old required to apply
Experience: N/A
Training/Certifications: Upon hire, applicant will receive training for American Red Cross Lifeguard skills and techniques or equivalent as well as CPR-PR certification, which must remain in good standing as a condition of employment

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR LIFEGUARD/WSI :
Education: No education required; minimum age of 16 years old required to apply
Experience: One (1) year experience as a lifeguard
Training/Certifications: Possess and maintain current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training or equivalent, WSI, and C.P.R-P.R certification

Lifeguards earn $12.56/hour
WSI earn $14.09/hour
