General Purpose
Performs a variety of unskilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of City parks and related outdoor and indoor recreational facilities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. This is a seasonal position running from May through October.
- Maintains grass, trees, shrubs and other vegetation in and around parks and recreation facilities, including mowing, seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, and watering.
- Maintains playing surfaces and surrounding areas on City baseball, softball and other athletic fields.
- Assists in the installation and maintenance of City docks, beaches and waterfront facilities.
- Assist in tree trimming and removal.
- Paint buildings and structures as needed.
- Cleans restrooms, grounds, equipment and other facilities.
- Performs general maintenance work on park and recreation buildings and facilities.
- Services and maintains equipment used in park and recreational facilities.
- Opens and closes, locks and unlocks facilities as needed.
- Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs; assists in preparing facilities for park and recreation program use.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES
- Performs other Public Works Department related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- This position requires a high school diploma, its equivalent or current enrollment, and some work experience, preferably related to outdoor and indoor recreational facilities maintenance.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge in horticulture and grounds maintenance, including lawn, shrubbery and tree care, working knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance as it relates to parks and recreational facilities; knowledge in the areas of plumbing, carpentry and electrical work; knowledge of small engine operation and maintenance; knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
- Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.
- Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to work safely; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to function in a team-based environment, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

- Must possess a valid State driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment.
- Must be able to work varied hours and days including evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Must demonstrate good communication and public relation skills.

Supplemental Information
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Pickup truck, lawn and landscaping equipment, including tractors, mowers, edgers, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers and irrigation systems; miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and cement finishing work.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud to loud.

Works under the general supervision of the Parks Superintendent.
