Job Summary

We do this as a driven team who cares about making a difference. We’re looking for enthusiastic, motivated individuals to be part of our seasonal Park Ranger team. This position offers great experience for someone interested in the fields of anthropology, biology, natural resources, conservation, criminal justice, or similar areas of interest.GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, this position promotes responsible recreation across a variety of the over fifty community parks, including water recreation areas, in New Braunfels. This position provides general visitor and resource protection, education, park interpretation, maintenance, and general repair duties.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all team members in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
- Work hours available are primarily summer weekends and holidays.
- Patrols all parks and recreational areas by means of one or more of the following modes: on foot (walking and/or hiking), on bicycle (on roadways, sidewalks and uneven terrain), and in a City vehicle to promote public safety and ensure proper use of parks and facilities.
- Provides quality customer service while ensuring public compliance of local regulations, permits, and ordinances through education, warnings and citations as directed, may collect fees, checks reserved areas, provides directions, and issues picnic permits.
- Controls activity levels within designated parks with gate security, providing crowd control during special events; monitors and directs traffic to ensure safe travel through park areas, setting up and removing barricades, as directed.
- Provides maintenance services such as trash/litter pick-up and removal, clean and restock bathrooms, etc.
- Recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries; may be called upon to assist other Park teams in emergencies
- Completes daily activity log, cash management reports, accident/incident reports and graffiti/vandalism reports.
- May present education and information programs for community and school projects; teaches and counsels the public on department activities and regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat; is subject to sitting, standing, bending, and reaching for extended periods of time; swimming, bicycling on roadways, sidewalks, and uneven terrain; and must be able to safely pull, push, lift and carry items weighing up to sixty (60) pounds.
- Must be able to work irregular hours including weekends, holidays, and evenings on any assigned shift.
- May be required to work immediately before, during or after an emergency or disaster.
- At all times, while on duty, Park Rangers shall be mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared to assume and competently perform all duties.
- NOTE: This position is designated safety and/or security sensitive.
Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalent; Must be eighteen (18) years of age; two (2) years of customer service/public interaction experience is preferred.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- In order to drive a City vehicle, must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.
- Must possess or be able to obtain within thirty (30) days of employment: Community First Aid and Safety/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) / Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification. We can help certify you!
