Summary

The City of Soldotna has an immediate openings for Seasonal Parks & Rec Laborers. These positions are open until filled. First review of applications will be on August 23, 2023.

The Parks & Recreation Laborer position, under the general supervision of the Parks & Recreation Director or designee, is responsible for assisting in maintaining the appearance, health, and safety of municipal parks and recreation facilities including; Soldotna Regional Sports Complex, parks, playgrounds, campgrounds, sports fields, trails, flowers and lawns. Successful Parks & Recreation Laborers have a combination of skills and traits including good customer service, an eye for detail, and an ability to follow direction and work independently. Laborers perform manual labor indoors and outdoors in all types of weather, working with their hands, and learning new things. May be required to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Detailed Work Activities

  • Performs regular and recurring tasks related to the maintenance and operation of parks and recreation facilities.
  • Operates vehicles and specialized equipment such as Zamboni, skid steer, lawn mowers, chain saws, ATV, snow plows, and various hand tools.
  • Perform general janitorial duties to include but not limited to sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping floors, emptying trash, cleaning windows, washing walls, cleaning locker rooms and restrooms.
  • Perform minor interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades work
  • Frequent outdoor work and exposure to inclement weather and rigorous conditions including snow removal from sidewalks, parking lots, trails and the maintenance of outdoor ice skating facilities.
  • Provides friendly customer service and works collaboratively with others to accomplish tasks.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to learn and understand basic carpentry, electrical systems, plumbing, mechanical systems, landscaping, and ice maintenance.
  • Ability to operate basic hand tools and power equipment, office equipment, computers and willingness to learn basic audio-visual equipment operations and setup.
  • Ability to effectively interact with public and at times enforce park and recreation policies.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision and ability to multi-task and prioritize work.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, parks patrons and the general public.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • Any combination of training and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the essential job functions will be considered.
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must be available to work varying schedules including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license. Must have and maintain a good driving record.

Work Environment:The work environment is typically out of doors where the employee must do work that is sometimes strenuous in all kinds of weather (e.g., high or low temperatures, fog, direct sunlight, wind) and in dirt and dust. Work is to be performed at above, or below floor or ground level. Work is also performed indoors in spaces that are adequately heated and lighted. The employee often handles unsanitary material and performs hazardous operations requiring personal protective equipment. The employee may be required to drive a vehicle. Noise from mowers, and other equipment is frequent. This work involves frequent exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Temperatures can range from -40 degrees to 85 degrees. Employee may be exposed to significant levels of noise within the Parks, Campgrounds and in the Soldotna Sports Center wherein the use of chemicals such as Freon ®, ethylene glycol, liquefied propane gas and urea is common. Personal protective equipment is provided and must be used in accordance with best practices, federal and state laws, and City/Department policies and operating procedures. Employee must be able to work an irregular work schedule at varied locations, as necessary.

Physical Demands:
This position requires a moderate level of physical ability including vision, hearing, speaking, flexibility, and strength. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to climb ladders and stairs; is required to perform general duties that may include, but not be limited to, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, reaching, dragging, and carrying; is required to use hands and fingers dexterously to operate power equipment and gardening implements (including power mowers, weed trimmers, shovels, rakes, etc.); is required to exert (often lifting) up to 50 pounds of force frequently and in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally.

The employee will be regularly required to stand and walk for extended periods of time and work in bent/hunched positions on the ground. Specific vision requirements include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, the ability to adjust focus, and the ability to judge distances and spatial relationships. The employee must be able to hear and to talk and communicate verbally in person.
