Summary
The City of Soldotna has immediate openings for Seasonal Parks & Rec Skate Guards. These positions are open until filled. First review of applications will be on August 23, 2023.
Under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Director or his/her designee, this position serves as a representative of the Parks and Recreation Department during ice activities with extensive public contact while ensuring rules are observed and skating activities occur in the safest possible manner.
Detailed Work Activities
• Facilitate a safe skating environment for all guests.
• Monitor and regulate public recreational skating during normal and special event public skate sessions.
• Provide assistance to patrons.
• Provide direction in the event of an emergency.
• Monitor that guests entering the ice for public skate have paid appropriate fees.
• Take proactive action in the event of an injury.
• Communicate, monitor, and enforce public skate rules and policies.
• Enforce appropriate disciplinary action for rule infractions.
• Communicate with fellow staff any matter of concern or in general toward completion of duties.
• Provide a detailed account of any incident occurring requiring medical attention or extreme discipline such as removal from skating privileges during a session.
• Properly store rental skates and organize rental skate room after public skate session.
• Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
• Assist with ice skating birthday party set up and cleanup needs.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Must be a competent ice skater.
• Must be able to communicate and interact professionally, at all times, with the general public and other staff members.
• Must have the ability to understand facility policies and rules in order to communicate with patrons during both positive and disciplinary exchanges.
• Must have the ability to use diplomacy and judgment communicating information while working directly with the public.
• Must have the ability to read and apply written instructions.
• Must have the ability to operate word processing, cell phone, various mobile devices, and office phone system.
• Ability to work additional hours or different schedule as required.
• Flexible work approach to assist and or fill in for other staff as required.
Qualifications
Must be a competent ice skater. Must have good communication skills in person, over the telephone, written, and electronic. Methods of communication used are speech, hearing, written and email.
Work Environment:Work is performed within the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex. Conditions fluctuate between office environment and ice rink environment. Employee may be exposed to significant levels of noise within the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex. Use of chemicals such as Freon®ethylene glycol, urea, cleaning agents and solvents is common onsite. Safety equipment will be provided to protect employee from chemical, noise and other hazards.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to: Ice skate, use hands and fingers to operate office equipment, communicate orally and in writing, walk, stand, reach with hands and arms, bend, kneel, stoop, and occasionally sit.
The employee may occasionally be required to move tables and chairs to set up for meetings, lift or move boxes of paper or archived records and set up and issue sports and activity equipment.
