Position Summary

The Senior Accountant is responsible for assisting the Accounting Supervisor. The position applies appropriate accounting theory to daily transactions as well as significant events. Position works with minimal direction, unless clarification is needed.

Responsibilities require a high degree of concentration, ingenuity, initiative and outstanding judgment in working on very involved and complex tasks. Duties involved require knowledge of District policies and procedures and their application to situations not previously covered.

  • The Senior Accountant is responsible for the controls and compliance of district accounting functions in the areas of:
    • Financial Statement Preparation
    • Fund Accounting
    • Plant Accounting
    • General Ledger Maintenance
    • Payables Processing
    • Receivables Processing
    • Payroll Processing
    • Financial accounting interfaces
    • Misc. Financial Reporting Functions

  • In addition, the Senior Accountant is required to become familiar with the functions in the areas of:
    • Work Order Ledger Maintenance
    • Stores Accounting
    • Treasury/Cash/Investment Accounting
    • Debt Transactions and Reporting
  • Recommend ways to reduce costs and enhance revenue.
  • Prepare workpapers for External Auditors.
  • Analyze financial statements for variances which includes research and documentation.
  • Thinks strategically and understand how decisions may impact others beyond their assigned area of responsibility.
  • Assessing internal controls, including risk assessments and reviews of risk area.
  • Reconcile accounts monthly to ensure accurate reporting and general ledger maintenance.
  • Assignments cover substantial areas of work and must be personally driven to meet deadlines, oversee work, and multi task.
  • Requires working knowledge of accounting practices and principles – where experience is applied to new situations to determine proper procedures.
  • Professional judgment is essential and requires proper application of accounting pronouncements and theory.
  • Must be able to train co-workers throughout the District on processes that interface with accounting.
  • Project management and proactive planning and execution of routine deadlines is critical. Will oversee multiple projects from staff going on concurrently. Proactive communication is essential.
  • Ability to perform the duties of the Accounting Supervisor when needed.

  • Understand and adhere to compliance requirements for this position that may include laws, regulations, security guidelines, Grant PUD policies & procedures.
  • Actively participate in all aspects of our safety program, including but not limited to:
    • Follow al safety policies and procedures.
    • Alerting Supervisors and coworkers to unsafe or hazardous working conditions.
    • Report any safety incidents or close calls within 24 hours to your supervisor.
    • Accept feedback from supervisors and coworkers regarding your own safety performance.

Education and Experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting or Finance.
  • 4 years’ experience in Public Utility, preferably in accounting.

Preferred

  • CPA or CMA

License and Certification

Required

  • A valid State driver’s license with no restrictions is required. Occasional travel to other Grant PUD locations required.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge: Required technical knowledge includes GAAP pronouncements and requirements, including GASB, BARS and FERC. Knowledge of computer systems and software including spreadsheets, database programming, word processing, and presentation graphics. The knowledge and ability to apply accounting theory and professional judgment is essential. Knowledge of State and Federal laws related to tax reporting and remittance.
  • Skills: Requires problem solving and team facilitation skills. Demonstrate effective and accurate communication skills, in both written and verbal forms, in interactions with other employees, vendors and/or customers. Must be an effective trainer in small and large group settings. Must be a creative thinker with good problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Abilities: Demonstrated team skills including ability to motivate, constructively criticize, organize and delegate. Must have good general people and leadership skills to effectively coach in a team environment. Demonstrate ability to exercise sound judgement in making decisions and evaluating people, and ability to handle multiple tasks. Must be able to control and manage stress in a positive manner. Ability to safeguard confidential information. Ability to develop software systems and controls.

  • Per Grant County PUD policy all employees are required to work at their designated headquarters at least two days per week.
  • Majority of work is performed in a standard office setting.
