The Anaheim Convention Center is owned and operated by the City of Anaheim and hosts 300 events each year, welcoming approximately 1.1 million visitors annually. Our mission is to provide a versatile, first class venue, reflecting the Pride of Anaheim that offers people throughout the world an opportunity to learn, interact, and exchange ideas. The Anaheim Convention Center also monitors operations and financial management of City owned sports and entertainment venues.

We are seeking a Senior Accountant to join in our mission by monitoring, maintaining, and administering accounting programs and services involving complex general accounting, the recording and reporting of financial transactions, and complex budgeting. The position currently leads the annual budget process, and financial monitoring of venue and partner contracts. The position may be assigned to any of the essential functions below. This position requires excellent communication skills. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) is desirable, but not required.

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities related to activities of the assigned accounting section; assist in planning, organizing and participating in the functions and activities of the assigned accounting operations.
  • Provide complete and accurate financial reports; prepare and verify interim and year-end adjusting journal entries; review, verify and test financial data; prepare interim and year-end financial narrative reports explaining variances with graphics and ratio analysis.
  • Monitor the posting, balancing and reconciliation of the general ledger and subsidiary accounts; examine all accounting transactions to ensure accuracy; adjust and correct financial records as necessary.
  • Prepare complete, accurate and timely financial statements and reports for management staff, auditors, regulatory agencies and financial institutions.
  • Prepare adjusting entries for all outstanding City debts; review and reconcile liability accounts.
  • Respond to inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information and training within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Assist in the preparation of the Convention, Sports and Entertainment Department’s annual budget; provide management with financial goals and guidelines.
  • Assist in overseeing the City’s financial interests and obligations under various management agreements at all C/S/E venues.
  • Authorize payroll data input for payment; ensure data input is in compliance with City’s MOU; approve payroll adjustments and early check pick-ups; coordinate the use of internal controls for the payroll system.
  • Review all tenant, lessor, contractor, and non-contracted billings; ensure compliance to contractual and department guidelines; review and approve all cash disbursements for the Convention Center.
  • Measure trade show exhibit space relative to changes in space agreements to eliminate potential problems over billing; ensure billings of all sponsor advertising banners, signs, and displays in public areas; review and meet with promoters to settle bills.
  • Audit contractor payments and general ledger accounts for financial control compliance.
  • Collect monies due from tenants before, during, and after Convention Center events; collect disputed amounts by writing, calling, or meeting with responsible parties.
  • May supervise, train, and direct the work of professional accounting and/or technical staff.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess three (3) years of responsible professional accounting experience supplemented by a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration, or a related field. An equivalent combination of experience and education sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Candidates must possess knowledge of principles and practices of accounting and auditing and their application to a wide variety of accounting transactions and problems; generally accepted accounting principles and procedures; general fund and cash management principles and procedures; grant accounting principles and practices; automated financial management systems; laws regulating public finance and fiscal operations; financial reporting practices as applied to governmental accounting regulations; principles and practices of modern office management procedures; methods and practices of debt service analysis; principles and practices of job costing; principles and practices of utilities cash management; principles and practices of financial modeling and data processing; principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation; principles and procedures of record keeping; principles of business letter writing and report preparation; office procedures, methods, and use of office equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases; pertinent federal, state and local laws, rules, codes and ordinances.

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to analyze and evaluate accounting and auditing problems; develop pertinent accounting related data in the preparation of reports and statements; develop and implement accounting system modifications; analyze and interpret financial and accounting records; analyze and evaluate the financial components of agreements and various federal, state, and county grants; examine and verify financial documents and reports; analyze, post, balance, and reconcile financial data, ledgers and accounts; analyze and interpret financial data; understand the organization and operation of the City and of outside agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities; understand, interpret, and apply general and specific administrative and departmental policies and procedures as well as applicable federal, state, and local policies, laws, and regulations; prepare clear and concise reports; plan and organize work to meet changing priorities and deadlines; effectively represent the City to outside individuals and agencies to accomplish the goals and objectives of the unit; work cooperatively with other departments, City officials, and outside agencies; respond tactfully, clearly, concisely, and appropriately to inquiries from the public, City staff, or other agencies on sensitive issues in area of responsibility; perform multiple tasks concurrently; operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications; work independently in the absence of supervision; understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
