HPD is entrusted with fulfilling these objectives through the goals and strategies of Housing Our Neighbors: A Blueprint for Housing and Homelessness, Mayor Adams’ comprehensive housing framework. To support this important work, the administration has committed $5 billion in new capital funding, bringing the 10-year planned investment in housing to $22 billion-the largest in the city’s history. This investment, coupled with a commitment to reduce administrative and regulatory barriers, is a multi-pronged strategy to tackle New York City’s complex housing crisis, by addressing homelessness and housing instability, promoting economic stability and mobility, increasing homeownership opportunities, improving health and safety, and increasing opportunities for equitable growth.

Your Team:

The Office of Communications oversees all public relations for the agency and is responsible for crafting a proactive strategy to promote agency initiatives, programs, and accomplishments to the media, our partners, our staff and the public. The division manages all interactions with the press, social media channels, the agency’s website, internal communications, as well as digital and print materials.

Your Impact:

The Senior Advisor for Communications is a highly motivated candidate who must be a creative planner, a critical thinker and passionate about how we use everything from digital communications, including the website and social media, and press to staff communications to make real change in our communities. The position works with all levels of the agency to promote and defend HPD’s programs, policies, and initiatives while building strong digital relationships with members of the press, the HPD community, City Hall and other agencies, and external partners. The position oversees all social media channels, the website and any other digital platforms. The best candidate is passionate about all forms of communications including social media, press and views their role as an integral part of tackling New York City’s housing crisis.

Your Role:

The primary role of the Senior Advisor for Communications is to advance an aggressive communications strategy that includes all media channels from press and social media to the website and direct emails as well as non-traditional forms of communication that rely on graphic design and video content. The majority of your time will be spent managing the agency’s website, producing digital content, including crafting outreach and public information campaigns; expanding our reach through new followers and increased engagement; building deep relationships within the agency as well as with external partners. Additionally, this position will oversee a press portfolio. They will report to the Assistant Commissioner of Communications and collaborate closely with every member of the communications team. The work is often time sensitive and occasionally requires work outside business hours.

Your Responsibilities:
• Execute communications plans while ensuring the team’s strategic visions are inclusive of every communications channel.
• Develop and execute a creative and digital media strategy, identifying opportunities to amplify the agency’s message across platforms.
• Manage creative services, including the creation of fliers, graphics and other materials needed by departments throughout the agency.
• Identify, create, edit, and design written and multimedia content by working with other departments across the agency and external partners, ensuring accuracy, relevance, and consistency of information while optimizing the agency’s reach.Draft social media content, website content as well as other public facing digital content.
• Photograph, video and live post from events and other media opportunities.
• Ensure template art, logo usage, and overall design support agency goals and objectives, maximize synergy with other digital and print materials, and adhere to City styles, standards, and practices.
• Pore through the news and social media channels on a daily basis to identify stories relating to the Agency and relevant policy areas, as well as stories that generate new ideas, and share relevant coverage with appropriate agency teams.
• Create digital toolkits. Write and edit content for agency partners to use on social media and implement new ways of communicating effectively with partners.
• Amplify positive news, internally as well as externally.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with emphasis in transportation, city or urban planning, sustainability, civil or transportation engineering, urban studies or design, architecture, business or public administration, economics, operations research, organizational behavior, or a related field; and two (2) years of satisfactory, full-time experience in an area related to the above-described duties; or

2. A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience. However, all candidates must possess at least one year of the experience as described under 1.

Preferred Skills
• 5+ years of full-time experience in communications, public relations, digital media, or related fields preferred. Open to candidates with experience in adjacent fields who have a deep passion for social media and creative services.
• Experience creating original content and engagement on all social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
• Ability to handle multiple deadlines in a fast-paced and quickly changing environment.
• Strong analytical and organization skills, attention to detail, and ability to fact-check and synthesize complex issues on a range of housing and urban policy topics.
• Discretion in handling sensitive and confidential matters and excellent judgment.
• Ability to work well independently and as a team player, switching often between the two.
• Passion for social media and communications is a must! Excitement for graphic design, videography and web design a plus
• A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
