The Boeing Company is currently seeking a Senior Application Replatforming Architect to join the team in either Seattle, WA; North Charleston, SC; Plano, TX; Seal Beach, CA; or Berkeley, MO.

Boeing is transforming its business replatforming, migrating and rehosting its suite of applications. This position will drive the transformation by collaborating and working closely with Application Architects/Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), Supplier Architects/Developers, Cloud Vendor Architects and Information Technology (IT) functions Architects such as security.

As the Senior Application Modernization Architect, you will be partnering with Company Application Architects/Developers and Supplier Architects/Developers building solutions that include business requirements, Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), Policy-as-Code (PaC), secure-by-design, threat modeling, full stack patterns, solution design, process design, software and business process optimization, design reviews, through discovery phase, build phase, execution, delivery and into operations.

The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other common service functions, interact with the most innovative and diverse people around the globe. This will include after working hours evening meetings on special occasions to work with the team in India to accommodate time zones.

Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • Drives IT and business strategy, capabilities development, tech councils, technical leadership and architecture governance aligned to future state modern cloud native solution products, services and roadmap
  • Oversees compliance to enterprise architecture requirements data architecture, data migration, data modeling, data access, data integration, data cataloging, data governance and implementation techniques
  • Provides solutions, patterns, Boeing tailored Infrastructure-as-Code examples/sample code, Policy-as-Code samples to the integration team for data migration, Actual Platform Implementation Specification (APIs) and Microservices
  • Provides guidance, feedback or input to and content for various reference architecture wiki articles, websites, read me files, tutorial documentation to drive patterns and playbooks for automation to manage “modernization as a product” or “platform as a product” type of product, services or outcome-based deliverables to customers and end users
  • Works with larger product management community to identify gaps and provide solutions, and influence the Program Increment planning for Platform Services for products and features
  • Works very closely with product managers, supplier architects/developers and business application architects to define technical product requirements and collaborate within agile team to drive user story/tasks creation along with design and development activities
  • Automates using Development, Security, Operations (DevSecOps)
  • Applies machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence and other available tools to expedite the product development along with first time quality
  • Participates in group sessions within developer community and share knowledge
  • Mentors team members and contribute in creating and maintaining best coding practices and oversight using stringent reviews
  • Resolves problems and roadblocks as they occur, consistently following through details while driving innovation as well as issue resolution
  • Monitors the implementation of architecture throughout the system development lifecycle and seek and provide clarification when needed
  • Works with cross-functional teams spread across multiple products and locations within Boeing and external partners, across different cultures and time-zones
  • Performs architecture assessments of legacy applications being considered for modernization
  • Innovates new ways to accelerate the modernization process
  • Provides metrics, measures and reports of success on a frequent basis to show accomplishments weekly at a minimum with facts and figures such as revenue earned, dollars saved, etc.
  • Works with supplier management, software asset management and any other teams regarding supplier challenges, or software licensing issues or contracting challenges
  • Leads the Tech Council to mediate any significant technical issue that is raised amongst various teams
  • Authors Tech Council decision memos and work with all stakeholders to obtain buying and consensus to the decisions, then publish and maintain the decisions for records and future reference

Additional Position Responsibilities:

  • Leads activities to define requirements, design and verify robust architecture cloud and software solutions
  • Leads the identification of design constraints and ensures architecture conforms to requirements
  • Incorporates architecture functions into software development lifecycle
  • Leads the development and configuration management of architecture views and models
  • Assesses of feasibility of architecture solutions and alternatives
  • Performs trade-off analyses
  • Evaluates products to assess suitability for integration into delivery system environments
  • Drafts data and information management products and service standards
  • Assesses impact of architectural decisions to product lifecycle
  • Develops architecture and data/information management standards and strategies
  • Coaches and mentors others
  • Leads weekly solution architecture meetings
  • Provides pre-gate review feedback, gate review meeting attendance and review input, post gate review feedback issues resolution to enable applications to meet gate requirements
  • Assists with Enterprise Systems Architecture Tool Suite (ESATS) waivers for applications or standardization of non-standard software to enable the applications and solutions to move to production
  • Coordinates and collaborates between Enterprise Cloud Teams and Modernization team
  • Engages new modernization customers and assist with onboarding them through the intake process, answering all technical questions

This position is hybrid. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options. This is at the hiring team’s discretion and could potentially change in the future.

This position must meet export control compliance requirements. To meet export control compliance requirements, a “U.S. Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.15 is required. “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • 10+ years of experience with application modernization best practices, development, solution architecture including database
  • 5+ years of experience with cloud technology (AWS, Azure, Google, PCF/Tanzu or similar)
  • 5+ years of experience with systems integration design differences between applications and platforms and DevSecOps design/development
  • 5+ years of experience working with geographical spread teams across time zones
  • 5+ years of experience with software development in Agile methodology
  • 5+ years of experience interaction with business architects, IT function architects and business executives

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Master’s degree or higher
  • Cloud Service Provider Official Certifications (e.g. AWS Certified Solution Architect, etc.)
  • 5+ years of experience software testing including automated testing
  • 5+ years of experience with DevOps software including Gitlab, Ansible, Terraform, Jira, Azure DevOps Pipelines, GitHub, AWS CodeBuild, AWS CodePipelines, AWS CodeGuru
  • 3+ years of experience developing good user interfaces
  • 3+ years of experience testing and debuging developed applications
  • Experience in Internet-based applications and development like ASP.NET, HTML, JavaScript, jQuery, Bootstrap, Python, Java
  • Experience in Windows and UNIX operating systems
  • Experience with data structures, data migration tools, and multiple DBMS, e.g. Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Teradata
  • Experience with automated system discovery and inventorying tools such as Flexera, CAST or similar
  • Experience with incident management, monitoring, observability and analytics tools, such as GSEP/Service now, Splunk, AppDynamics and cloud native monitoring (e.g. AWS CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, GCP Cloud Logging, etc)

Typical Education & Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years’ related work experience, Master+12 years’ related work experience, 18 years’ related work experience, etc.).

Summary pay range: $142,800 – $207,000
