Senior Associate, Technical Accounting

Role Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing technical accounting support to the different constituents at the company on both a statutory and GAAP basis as needed by doing technical accounting research and documenting the Company’s position on complex transactions
  • Update and maintain the Company’s accounting policy manual by identifying policies that require update based on our rotation schedule as well as policies that require update based on new standards that have become effective under both statutory and U.S. GAAP accounting
  • Provide technical support to the reporting teams during the financial statements pro-forma process. This process requires an in-depth review of the accounting policy disclosures, recent accounting pronouncements and any other disclosures requiring update mainly for the insurance companies’ financials, but also for a number of non-insurance subsidiary financials
  • Actively monitor US GAAP and US SAP standard setter activities and assist with the update of APD’s accounting standards database.
  • Assist with the preparation and dissemination of information on new and emerging accounting and reporting matters. This includes the preparation of the quarterly standard setters reports as well as leading education sessions with the appropriate constituents
  • Assist with the documentation of the Company’s implementation of all new accounting pronouncements by preparing memorandums on the new technical guidance including their impact to the different areas of the company
  • Review quarterly accounting changes and prepare statistical reports for upper management
  • Participate in industry calls related to standard setter activity impacting the industry and voice NYL’s position as needed
  • Assist with the preparation of In Flights reports, which requires coordination with the different business units regarding transactions of interest by the Controller
  • Develop an understanding of investment-related and insurance-related International Accounting Standards to properly support the Company’s Canadian branches
  • Manage the group’s SOX processes and provide requested support timely
  • Manage the rep letter process for the GMTN program

Business Experience and Technical Skills

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting. CPA license is a plus
  • Public accounting with an insurance industry focus and with 3 years of experience a plus
  • Strong ability to analyze complex accounting issues and transactions and perform accounting research
  • Strong ability to interpret complex accounting standards and document the Company’s position thoroughly
  • Good understanding of statutory accounting standards for insurance companies
  • Ability to work independently and solve complex problems with limited supervision
  • Ability to work across different areas of the organization
  • Comfortable with presenting at meetings and disseminating complex accounting information in a concise, clear manner

Salary range: $65,000-$100,000

Overtime eligible: Exempt
