Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Data Center Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core data center infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year data center planning, design and construction projects. We are looking for a professional individual to help design and build the cloud data centers that power the world’s largest online services.
The Senior Civil Engineer (Data Center-Americas/AMERS) will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) within Microsoft DCE. This person will work collaboratively with our America’s (AMERS) DCE team to provide expert civil engineering design review and guidance, technical leadership, and coordinated design direction for civil engineering elements and infrastructure for data center site due diligence, campus master planning, site selection, data center building and infrastructure design, permitting and construction administration. The Senior Civil Engineering SME will work on multiple AMERS region projects and collaborate with the team that is launching Microsoft’s best-in-class cloud infrastructure worldwide.

Responsibilities:
- Engage with key Microsoft stakeholder groups, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ), and external architectural & engineering (A/E) consultant teams and construction contractors that specialize datacenter architecture, engineering, and construction to ensure that Microsoft’s data center technical design standards and quality are met.
- Provide civil and structural engineering technical review and oversight for new data center designs, builds, leases, and renovations in addition to civil/structural technical support for site selection, due diligence, master planning and permitting.
- Typical work tasks can include geotechnical report review, foundation selection evaluation, topographic and boundary survey review, site civil utilities and infrastructure review, structural design review, code analyses, covenant/restriction review, and coordination with AHJ’s, building departments, utility purveyors, and A/E partner teams.
Qualifications:
Required/Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, or Structural Engineering, or related field, AND 3+ years technical experience in civil engineering or structural engineering
- OR equivalent experience.
- Professional Engineering License in Civil Engineering required.
- 3+ years’ experience working in mission critical and working knowledge on land acquisition, site masterplanning, permitting and development.
- 3+ years’ experience in navigating in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, BIM360, Bluebeam and Sketchup software for design review and development of conceptual level masterplans during site selection and early design phases.
- 2+ years’ experience performing complex business case analysis to justify technical design approaches and decisions.
- 2+ years experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.

- The ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, or Structural Engineering, or related field, AND 8+ years technical experience in civil engineering or structural engineering
- OR equivalent experience.
- 3+ years technical experience working with large-scale cloud or distributed systems.
- Management Information Systems (MIS), or other industry or product specific Engineering Certifications.
- 8+ years’ experience in civil engineering design of essential and mission critical facilities in different climate regions and high, medium, and low seismic regions.
- 8+ years’ experience participating on and leading teams for large scale critical facilities and infrastructure development projects with multi-disciplinary teams of architects and engineers.
- 6+ years’ experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.
- Spanish and/or French language proficiency a plus.
Service Engineering IC4 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 – $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 – $238,600 per year.
