I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The National Capital Poison Center (NCPC; a.k.a. “Poison Control”), founded in 1980, is an independent, private, not-for-profit 501©(3) organization affiliated with The George Washington University. In recognition of its high quality, the Center is accredited by America’s Poison Centers. The mission of NCPC is to prevent poisonings, save lives, and limit injury from poisoning.

NCPC seeks a Senior Communications Associate to manage its public education activities and awareness efforts. This individual in this role will be responsible for supporting and maintaining new and existing digital communications strategies that integrate paid, earned, shared, and owned media as well as nondigital awareness and promotion campaigns. The goal of these efforts will be to increase website traffic, use of NCPC’s online and call center services by the public and health professionals, and digital content engagement. Given the natural link between communications and fundraising, this candidate will also support the Center’s fundraising and development efforts. This is a great opportunity to be part of a team that is promoting the first and most powerful online triage guidance app that has helped nearly one million patients to date (webPOISONCONTROL). Several million more can be served but we need to let them know about our services. That is where you will help! Become part of a team that works hard to reassure panicked parents when their toddlers get into household products, save millions of healthcare dollars by avoiding unnecessary trips to the ER, and save lives.

The incumbent must work on-site at least three days per week. The National Capital Poison Center is located in Northwest DC, near Tenleytown and American University. Parking is provided. Occasional regional and national travel may be required. The incumbent must have a car for transportation to events such as health fairs and regional conferences, and to take letters and packages to the post office. Packages and boxes occasionally require heavy lifting.

Duties include:

  • Enter article text on NCPC websites and ensure that content on the website is timely, up-to-date, fresh, relevant, and addresses the public’s need for poison prevention information.
  • Create graphic designs for communications as needed to enhance prevention and awareness messages which promote the message that the public can seek help online or call poison control for suspected poisonings and for questions about poisonings.
  • Monitor calls and keep track of how to best ensure callers awareness of the entirety of NCPC services.
  • Monitor, evaluate, document, and summarize media and public education activities for reports to funders and accrediting agencies.
