Job Description

The Senior Corporate Counsel, Integrity and Compliance, reporting to the VP, Senior Associate General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer, will bring extensive and well-rounded compliance and ethics experience, preferably in a highly regulated industry, and will support the VP on both a strategic and tactical level. The successful candidate will interact with all levels of management and design and lead initiatives and projects designed to foster a culture of compliance and ethics across all of Adtalem’s institutions. This individual will be engaged with managing all aspects of compliance-related duties including, but not limited to, investigations, compliance training and communications, risk assessments, and policy and procedures updates. This role will from time-to-time support other projects for the Integrity and Compliance team. The ideal candidate will be experienced, proactive, highly organized, motivated and be able to work well both as part of a team and independently.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities in collaboration with the VP, Senior Associate General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer:

  • Participates in the development of Integrity and Compliance (IC) annual plan
  • Updates, maintains, and implements Adtalem’s Code of Conduct
  • Possesses the ability to investigate and work with local and federal law enforcement on allegations of fraud and other criminal activity
  • Partners with internal audit to fulfill company audit requirements
  • Manages and drives compliance risk assessments
  • Manages compliance and ethics policy updates, revisions, and develops compliance plans
  • Manages all aspects of the IC training and learning program
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of a multi-media, integrated IC communications plan
  • Manages Adtalem’s “Speak Up” program and related employee-facing policies and protocols
  • Manages and hosts Steering Committee meetings with cross-functional stakeholders
  • Supports the Chief Compliance Officer in developing presentations for Board of Directors and Executive Management
  • Manages IC’s vendors to ensure proper service and accountability
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest developments in compliance and ethics, college, university law and in other related areas
  • Completes other projects and duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • J. D. from an accredited law school. Required
  • Applicants must have ten or more years of substantive law firm and/or in-house legal experience, with at least five years in-house Preferred and
  • Experience working as an HR professional either before or after attending law school highly valued. Required and
  • Experience providing legal support to company or business unit wide HR and business teams on all employment and labor-related issues, policies, and programs directly and via management of domestic and international outside counsel. Required and
  • Experience managing, and directing outside counsel supporting, internal investigations, responses to EEOC and similar state agency complaints and employment litigation. Required and
  • Experience interfacing with government and/or labor and employment agencies with jurisdiction over employment and labor-related legal matters Required and
  • Experience as primary or second chair counsel in the litigation of employment and labor-related cases Preferred
  • Must be in good standing with the Illinois State bar.
  • Excellent client management and communication skills; both oral and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work well in a fluid/fast-paced, highly collaborative, team environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly assess potential for risk and opportunity.
  • Possesses strong work ethic and customer service orientation and ability to prioritize conflicting demands from multiple business clients
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of management, to manage multiple projects simultaneously, exercise sound judgment and work independently and efficiently, and meet deadlines with consistently high-quality work product in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be a proactive self-starter with strong leadership skills

Additional Information

In support of the pay transparency laws enacted across the country, the expected salary range for this position is between $97253.99 and $175761.85. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; geographic location; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.
