Senior Data Product Manager and Governance Specialist

At Protective we are on a journey to improve our ability to use data to serve our customers and solve our most complex business challenges. Historically, data teams have worked independently to resolve data quality issues and build data products to meet specific needs, which invites opportunities to drive efficiencies and improve our operations by breaking down silos and building enterprise level capabilities in these areas. This role will take ownership for defining and operationalizing data across domains, working closely with data analysts, engineers, data scientists, and other cross functional teams to define metrics (and other data governance policies), align on key results, prioritize development, and deliver data products. This role will also partner with the Data Governance Lead to drive adoption of the overarching data governance program initiatives.

We have laid the foundation for the following programs and are looking for someone to help expand them across the enterprise:

A. Data Governance Forum – drives data discussions, escalates data issues, standardizes data use, approves definitions, and so much more across the community of cross functional users

B. Data Stewardship – formalizes accountability of managing information and data assets on behalf of others and for the best interest of the organization

C. Business Glossary and Data Dictionary – defines business terms and links them to trusted data sources to improve the clarity and usability of our data assets

D. Data Quality Program – develops and maintains processes supporting the quality of our data assets

E. Data Product and Demand Management (our newest addition) – improves tracking and data governance compliance for new enterprise data products

Success in this position will require the following:

6. Aptitude in driving problem solving conversations, pushing through ambiguity, and making recommendations

7. The ability to develop trusted partnerships across a wide spectrum of teams
Responsibilities

  • Develops trusted relationships across business and information technology teams to establish data owners/data stewards to maintain data assets.
  • Partners with business management, data science and reporting analyst teams to align data quality prioritization with opportunities to provide business value.
  • Leads the Data Governance Forum consisting of cross functional representation across the business and IT to drive standardization in our data terminology to improve data quality and usability.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains programs to expand and maintain our business glossary, data dictionary, and data catalog capabilities.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains user experience strategies such that our data stewardship capabilities provide the greatest value and ease of use to our key stakeholders.
  • Manages demand management processes to understand data product needs and prioritize to align with enterprise strategy.
  • Partners with business stakeholders and data stewards to understand data product requirements.
  • Partners with data engineering, data governance, data architecture, and other technical stakeholders to understand data project feasibility and inform accountability for project roles.
  • Accountable for data product lifecycle including tracking success of data products during implementation, maintenance after go-live, and eventual product retirement.
  • Accountable for ensuring specific policies/requirements that should be a part of any data project are completed, e.g., data quality, business glossary, data classification.
  • Qualifications

  • Associate, Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent work experience required.
  • 6+ years of work experience in positions leading cross-functional teams, delivering executive communication (written and verbal), executing business process improvement initiatives, and understanding data’s relationship to business and information technology processes.
  • Previous positions that would provide the requisite experience for this position could include but are not limited to the following: data governance, IT audit, data analytics and reporting, business process improvement, financial reporting, or system implementation positions.
  • Ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical audiences required
  • Ability to articulate business drivers to technical audiences required
  • Strong communication and presentation skills required
  • Ability to lead, influence and modify behaviors on a team comprised of IT and business partners in support of improving data quality required
  • Communication and conflict resolution skills to reconcile different points of view and requirements during cross-team and cross-organization efforts required
  • Strong interpersonal skills to coach and manage employees and build collaborative relationships with peers required
  • Six Sigma or business process improvement experience a plus
  • Protective’s targeted salary range for this position is $85,000 to $125,000. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors, including but not limited to, job location, skills, and experience. The range listed is just one component of Protective’s total compensation package for employees. This position also offers additional incentive opportunities through an annual incentive based on individual and Company performance.
