DESCRIPTION

The Senior Director of Development (SDOD), Athletics reporting to the Senior Executive Director of Development, Campus Initiatives and International, and working in consultation/conjunction with the AVC-ACAGPDI and Director of Athletics, plans and implements strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift prospects for Intercollegiate Athletics. The SDOD will formulate and implement the fundraising program for Athletics including their departments and programs. The SDOD prepares written and oral presentations to potential donors and coordinates approaches as defined by campus policy and procedures; develops gift opportunities consistent with the divisions’ priorities and UC San Diego’s mission; and collaborates with Central Advancement, including Corporate and Foundation Relations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven success as a development officer in a highly sophisticated donor-centered fund-raising environment as a direct line fundraiser with five or more years of experience.
  • Expert working knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques. Proven experience in the full spectrum of development including: gift policies, solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition and administration.
  • Expert written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Expert skills in making persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts. Ability to communicate effectively one-on-one or in group settings, taking into account differences in social, cultural, professional, andeducational backgrounds.
  • Proven administrative ability to provide lead direction to staff and volunteers in accomplishing established goals and objectives and maintain office activities with respect to established procedures and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated success at fundraising by developing and implementing strategic solicitation fundraising plans that incorporate a concise definition of goals, targeted audiences, and strategies in-line with institution and academic goals in higher education and closing gifts ($100,000+) from individuals, corporations and foundations, both local and national.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement persuasive cultivation ideas and techniques and provide critical analysis, using sound judgment with realistic expectations for prospects and donors.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the philosophy of quality service and group process, with proven aptitude for working as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated competency and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. Demonstrated understanding of the importance of ensuring an equitable, inclusive, and diverse working environment, with the ability to work as a part of a diverse and collaborative team.
  • Proven record of writing proposals for a significant project/gift ($100,000+) directed to individuals and foundations/ corporations.
  • Expert organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills. Expert project / program management skills, including skills in setting and meeting program / project goals and objectives within budget and time constraints.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, faculty, donors, volunteers and University officials, with an emphasis on tact, diplomacy, flexibility, professionalism and discretion.
  • Proven knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations to provide direction to special programs for outreach to prospective and existing donors.
  • Expert knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
  • Expert level skills in maintaining confidentiality. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, with a strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence and motivation. Foster the Principles of Community by promoting and supporting a climate of fairness, cooperation, civility, mutual respect and professionalism.
  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of the location, including current issues of concern for both the campus and / or throughout higher education / healthcare, generally. Expert knowledge of the location, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills that demonstrate correct grammar usage, syntax and format, with the demonstrated ability to make oral presentations and/or interpret various related programs to potential donors.
  • Demonstrated skill in the technique of donor prospect research with the ability to extract the pertinent/critical information from various documents.
  • Demonstrated expertise to utilize on-line databases and other software to create, retrieve and compile up-to-the-minute documents and historical information for reports
  • Demonstrated competency and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $87,000 – $202,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $41.67 – $97.03

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
