Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking an Environmental Waste Classifier to join the Naval Reactors Facility (NRF) Waste Engineering and Characterization Team. This role includes: Characterizing waste for treatment and disposal at off-site disposal facilities, supporting engineering and operational groups as they generate and properly control waste, and preparing sample and analysis plans to take samples of potential waste items to determine the presence of any hazardous constituents. Specific job tasks include, characterizing waste, determining waste packaging, and validating waste acceptance criteria is met. Review work documents, engineering evaluations, and/or analyses to support assigned tasks. Interpret regulatory requirements for implementation into waste management practices. Act as the interface between waste generators and Waste Programs to ensure proper generations of regulated wastes.

Environmental Classifiers will be expected to have a working knowledge of Resource Conversation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA), Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), Department of Transportations (DOT), and radioactive material regulations. Environmental Classifiers are required to successfully complete an on-the-job qualification demonstrating acceptable knowledge to these regulatory requirements. Candidate must be able to successfully qualify as a Radiation Worker and meet basic physical requirements (climbing, walking, standing, light lifting).

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

BS degree in engineering or Bachelor’s degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of six years of relevant experience or; MS degree in engineering or Master’s degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or; Currently or previously Shift Supervisor Part I qualified or EDO and two years as EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program or Three years as SRE plus Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and Fuel and Barrier Shift Supervisor (ECF only) or SRE qualified and six years of experience

Preferred Skills

Experience with DOT, RCRA, TSCA, Asbestos and Radiological Material regulations

Experience with waste management

Problem Evaluation and Solution Development

Attention to detail to maintain waste documentation

Able to work with multiple stakeholders

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Proficient in standard software

Pay Range

$93,400- $140,000 Annually
