Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the installation, service, and maintenance of core switches, routers, SONET transport, DWDM and other related equipment as necessary and directed.
- Conduct customer site surveys and maintain updated documentation of the fiber infrastructure. Work directly with the City of Raleigh GIS Team to map current fiber paths and fiber assets.
- Test and validate all new circuits, hardware, and connections for proper configuration and performance.
- Ensure all fibers, cables and other connections are properly tagged and identified and that these connections have the proper physical support such as fiber duct, spiral wrap and strand relief supports.
- Ensure all equipment is mounted properly and securely to ensure network reliability.
- Maintain all spare stock for all last mile and customer premise equipment necessary for the delivery of the City of Raleigh Fiber Metro Ethernet and Metro Transport.
- Maintain proficiency in troubleshooting techniques and the use of test equipment such as optical power meters, OTDRs, Optical Spectrum Analyzers, Ethernet Sniffer and Ethernet, SONET, T1 and DS3 test equipment.
- Troubleshoot City of Raleigh fiber circuits to resolve issues such as but not limited to Low signal levels, loss of signal, High BER, Packet Loss, Mis-Balanced DWDM systems (non-ROADM), FDV and latency issues.
- Troubleshoot City of Raleigh fiber circuits using any of the following test equipment as necessary:
- OTDR (must be able to read and convey readings to Network Engineers or construction teams.)
- Optical power meter
- Knowledge and experience with DC Power
- Ethernet Test Set (layer 2 & 3; JDSU, EXFO)
- SONET Test Set (OC-192 down to VT1.5)
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in information technology or directly related field and five years of professional experience in area related to assignment.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing/Certifications
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
Preferred Experience
- Ethernet routing, TDM & SONET circuits, CWDM technologies, or DWDM technologies.
Preferred Licensing/Certifications
- CCNA, SONET or DWDM, MEF CECP
Additional Information
Desired Skills:
- Understanding of Metro Ethernet transport including IP subnetting, netting, domain controllers, VLANS, Q&Q, dot1q tunnels, COS, CDP, VTP, and related subjects.
- Understanding of TDM circuit operations, including test access, circuit testing, line coding and framing of DS1’s, DS3’s, OC3’s, OC12’s, OC48’s and OC192’s.
- Solid understanding of RFC2544 Turn-up testing and ITU-T T.1564 Turn-up testing
- Must be able to efficiently operate test equipment such as optical power meters, OTDR, Optical Spectrum Analyzers, and Ethernet, SONET, T1 and DS3 test equipment.
- Understanding of transport protocols such as MPLS, VPLS, RPR, SONET and similar network protocols.
- Basic understanding of OSPF and BGP routing.
- Experience with network troubleshooting techniques using the OSI model.
- Basic knowledge of telco standards such as counting cables, creating fittings, terminating cable and running cable is preferred.
- Experience performing work inside of a Central Office or Datacenter environment.
- Hands on experience with Cisco optical platforms such as Cisco XPE, Cisco ONS, or Cisco NCS, as well as CWDM Couplers.
- Ability to read instructions, specifications, and blueprints to determine work activities
- Ability to create and maintain excellent records of splice diagrams, patch panels, and test results
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Visio
- Ability to perform a wide spectrum of moderately complex assignments requiring analysis, innovation, and judgement.
- Ability to distinguish colors and fine print accurately.
- Strong track record of adhering to OSHA regulations and guidelines.
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong working relationships across all levels of the organization.
- Ability to assess problems, research alternatives and pursue acceptable solutions while remaining within company guidelines. Must be innovative, able to reset priorities and use resources to meet the needs of the business.
