Introduction
The Prince William County Department of Public Works, Construction & Operations Division, Mosquito and Forest Pest Management Branch is seeking a Senior Biologist to join our team. Utilizing an Integrated Pest Management approach, Mosquito & Forest Pest Management works to minimize mosquito-transmitted diseases, tree defoliation/mortality, and overall forest heath through surveillance, pest population reduction, and public outreach and education.
The Senior Field Biologist will perform field and laboratory work in support of managing mosquito, spongy moth, fall cankerworm, and other forest pest populations. This position assists in coordinating outreach efforts, performs public outreach and produces in-house literature for public education. Work will be performed in a variety of settings including field, office, and laboratory. ABOUT THIS ROLE:
This position directly supports mosquito and forest pest surveillance activities by setting, collecting, processing, and identifying to species mosquito and forest pest specimens. It also directly supports disease testing efforts of these specimens where strict laboratory procedures must be followed. The position will directly support, assist development, and participate in all aspects of the Branch’s public outreach and education initiative by attending physical events, producing educational materials, and developing digital content. Finally, the position supports quality control and quality assurance assessments to ensure products and processes are working as expected.
NEW MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or G.E.D. and 2 years of related experience.
PREFERENCES: the successful candidate will have…
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Entomology, Environmental Science, Agriculture, Forestry, General Science, or other related field
- At least 2 years of experience:
- Conducting fieldwork in a variety of environments
- Arthropod and vector identification
- Tree identification and awareness of common forest pest signs and symptoms
- Providing education, outreach, and customer service to a wide diversity of stakeholders
- Applying pesticides with common application equipment
- Maintenance and inventory of assigned equipment and products
SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:
This position is scheduled Monday through Friday for 37.5 hours per week. Some overtime will be required on nights and weekends. The selected candidate will work out of the Mosquito and Forest Pest Management Building located just south of Manassas, VA in Prince William County.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The selected candidate will be a Virginia Certified Pesticide Applicator with Category 8 or obtain a certification within 1 year of hire.
ENTRY SALARY RANGE:
$25.65 – $31.00 hourly
