The Senior Inspector – Park and Recreation supervises, leads and provides skilled professional inspections, investigations and enforcement of construction standards for construction projects impacting Park and Recreation property, facilities and related infrastructure. Monitors compliance, enforces regulations, and provides expert direction and leadership for other inspectors.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts inspections on assigned Park and Recreation construction projects to determine compliance with safety, structural, zoning, plans, and/or applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Inspects a variety of construction projects completed by contractors and other entities to ensure compliance with city’s paving, utility, and construction standards.
  • Investigates alleged violations of federal, state, and local codes, ordinances, and regulations; ensures corrections are made for deficiencies and assists in determining methods to achieve conformance.
  • Develops and issues notices of violation and conducts follow-up inspections to ensure corrections are made; provides information to customers regarding codes and other regulatory requirements.
  • Measures quantities of materials used and keeps an accurate record of events to verify contractor’s invoice quantities prior to payment; reviews and evaluates all permits for job sites ensuring appropriate dates and information.
  • Leads inspection staff performing inspections for the City, monitors work of other inspectors and provides support to solve more complex inspections.
  • Interacts and collaborates with engineers, contractors, and other agencies to ensure appropriate specifications are met for project compliance.
  • Performs professional customer service; engages and communicates with contractors, engineers, and other individuals involved in construction projects and related areas.
  • Establishes inspection route and organizes inspection work; drives to various sites, documents inspection findings, and develops pass or fail reports accordingly; submits all information and evidence to ensure deficiencies are corrected.
  • Provides and participates in various training necessary to stay abreast of changing trends in construction and related inspection regulations; gives direction and insight to other contractors and City staff working construction projects.
  • Keeps an approved list of new materials used in construction and changes in relevant codes and ordinances.
  • Performs all other work as needed or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of city, state, or federal codes, ordinances, rules, regulations and standards in construction and related projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
  • Knowledge of performing inspections and determining non-compliant issues.
  • Ability to conduct thorough inspections.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport and working relationship with federal, state and local agencies, other city departments and the general public.
  • Knowledge of supervision, training, and overseeing inspectors; evaluating work and recommending changes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to produce written documents/reports with clearly organized thoughts.
  • Ability to keep accurate records; comprehend and make inferences from written material.
  • Knowledge of customer service practices and principles.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
  • Ability to assist and provide guidance for other personnel performing inspections and related work.

Work Experience

Five (5) years of experience performing construction inspections.

Certifications and Licenses

Texas Driver’s License

Education

High School Diploma, GED
