Description / Position Overview
Senior Landscape Architect

In this position, you will coordinate the development of exterior spaces, parks, open spaces, and trail environments; lead the public planning process for the development of park master plans and management plans; manage the planning process for long-range or current master plans; and serve as construction manager for park developments. In addition, this position must have a solid understanding of how to manage and facilitate community meetings and work regularly with internal and community stakeholders.

Essential Job Functions: – the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:

  • Oversee the development of schematic through final design site plans and construction details, specifications, and bid documents; track and coordinate project costs, develop and manage project budgets and conduct site visits and analyses on the parks, open space, and trail properties
  • Coordinate proposed work within parks, open spaces, and trails with existing Friends Groups and other external groups; prepare and present projects to various official boards and citizen’s groups
  • Act as the construction manager and work closely with the Capital Project Coordinator and contractors to execute and oversee development projects on parks properties

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

Knowledge of:

  • Pertinent state and local laws, codes, and regulations
  • Title II ADA Standards, regulations, and requirements
  • Principles and Procedures of Landscape Architecture
  • Principles and Procedures of Project Management
  • Principles and Procedures of Construction Management

Ability to:

  • Lead volunteers on projects pertaining to trail construction
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
  • Prepare a design or construction project for procurement for a qualified contractor
  • Problem solve challenging site designs, projects, and constraints
  • Work well with a team and independently
  • Execute a project from concept through construction implementation
  • Multi-task in a fast-paced work environment with changing priorities
  • Take project ideas from the entire Parks Department and prepare a planned approach

Successful candidates will have

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in landscape architecture, architecture, or a related.
  • Five years of full-time, professional experience in landscape architecture, including two years of administrator and/or supervisory experience.
  • Be registered as a Professional Landscape Architect by the Colorado State Board of Landscape Architects
  • Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
  • Experience using AutoCAD or other design modeling software

One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.

Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

Ideal candidates will also have

  • Experience in Construction Management
  • Experience working on projects in the public sector, including parks, open space and/or trail projects

Additional Information
Outdoor work will be required in locations where trails do not exist and where hiking occurs over steep slopes and uneven surfaces.

Physical Demands: This position requires the ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, and walking or standing to a significant degree.

This position requires the ability to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally; stand, sit, stoop, climb, and bend for extended periods; and hike up to six miles.

The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments, including shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell back.
