This recruitment is to establish a qualified list to fill one (1) part-time position within the Recreation and Community Services Department.

THE POSITION
This is a non-benefited, at-will part-time position.
The incumbent will be under the general supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor, to supervise the staff and recreational activities at the City swimming pool; to perform the full range of lifeguarding and instruction duties; and to do related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Prevents accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct of persons at the swimming pool; keeps attentive lookout for accidents in the water or on diving board or swimming pool deck; warns people against dangerous practices regarding pool use; enters the water to rescue people in distress; administers artificial respiration and first aid; assists with routine pool cleaning and maintenance work on or about the swimming pool as required; assists in supervising special swim events; may open the facility and supervise pool operations. The following examples are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by persons assigned to this classification.
Assists the Aquatics Supervisor in supervising staff and recreational activities; supervises swimming, swim instruction and special events; assigns and supervises the work of lifeguards and other pool personnel; assists in performing the routine mechanical operation of the swimming pool including the inspection of filters; may perform routine chemical tests to determine purity of pool water; inspects buildings, grounds and equipment to insure acceptable sanitary and safety conditions; gives swimming and lifesaving instruction to all age groups; recommends recreational programs, facility improvements and safety procedures; maintains records and prepares reports.
Qualifications
Knowledge of principles and practices of swimming pool operation and routine maintenance; principles and techniques of artificial respiration and first aid; policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using the swimming pool; life saving equipment and its use; principles of supervision and training.
Ability to supervise swimming pool operations and activities; supervise and train lifeguarding personnel; supervise the conduct and safety of pool patrons and maintain order in a tactful manner; effectively use a variety of safety equipment; instruct techniques of swimming and life savings; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with employee and the public; prepare clear and concise reports; read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
Requirements
Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledges and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledges and abilities would be:
Experience: One (1) year of experience as a lifeguard.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid American Red Cross Water Safety and Instructor Certificates or approved equivalent; standard CPR Certificate and First Aid for Professional Rescuer.

PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The majority of work is performed indoors in a swimming pool. An incumbent sits, stands, walks and runs on slippery and uneven surfaces, kneels, crouches, twists, climbs ladders and inclines, swims, reaches, bends, crawls, and pushes, pulls, drags, grasps and lifts pool/community center equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
While performing the duties of this job, an incumbent physically must be able to react quickly to lifesaving emergencies and will perform strenuous physical activity requiring physical strength and endurance when performing water rescues.
During the course of some rescue and first aid tasks, an incumbent may be exposed to blood, other bodily fluids/products, communicable diseases and other related health hazards. An incumbent will have exposure to pool water and pool chemicals, cleaning solvents and disinfectants and electrical and mechanical hazards. An incumbent must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.

Temporary/seasonal/part-time employment status does not qualify for City benefits, except for those required by law. Part-time shifts may not exceed 20 hours per week, or 950 hours on a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30). Part-time positions are “at-will”. There are no rights to employment and employment may end at any time with or without cause or advance notice.
Candidates may be require to work irregular hours, various shifts, weekends, holidays and/or on-call status. Working hours to be assigned at the discretion of the Recreation & Community Services Department.
EMERGENCY DISASTER WORKER
City of Lynwood employees are registered as an Emergency Disaster Worker. All City employees are required to perform assigned Emergency Service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster.
