ABOUT THE ROLE

The Senior Manager of Contracts is a leadership role within our corporate legal team and plays an integral part in 3Degrees’ meeting our customer volume and demand. This role will lead the contracts department while also supporting other functions provided by the legal team. Key to success in this position is the ability to build strong working relationships with business units and identify and articulate key deal points, and draft and negotiate a growing number of environmental commodity contracts and other transactional documents.

This is a full-time position reporting to the General Counsel and the preferred location is San Francisco, CA or Portland, OR, where you can enjoy a flexible, hybrid-working pattern. For highly qualified candidates in the U.S., a remote office with agreement to travel to San Francisco for training and collaboration will be considered. Remote workers agree that their home office provides a comfortable and productive environment that enables success in the role as a “remote” employee. WHAT YOU’LL DO
In this role, you will evolve, execute and monitor all stages of the contracting process in a manner that ensures that details are accurately captured in our inventory management system, prudently manage contractual risk, mitigate through-put/pipeline constraints, strengthen relationships with counterparties, and bring each transaction to an efficient close. You will actively manage a team of contract managers and administrators in the following two key areas to achieve department goals.

Lead a department that will implement scalable contracting processes:

  • Coordinate with legal team members to develop templates, contracting guidelines and applicable training materials to ensure that contracts are drafted, reviewed and negotiated in a timely fashion and that team members possess the necessary skills and knowledge to execute on the 3Degrees mission
  • Manage all phases of contract execution and customer interaction across a range of transactions from “basic” to sophisticated “bespoke”. This includes effectively communicating with internal management on contractual issues and offerings to develop and coordinate business positions and contractual terms
  • Apply formal best practice methodologies to develop and implement contract strategies to support the contracting process
  • Determine processes related to RFP’s (Request for Proposals) and KYC (Know Your Customer), and related onboarding forms
  • Ensure contracts are negotiated and administered in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies and procedures
  • Provide business line suggestions for improvement of the contracts management tools, process and procedures in order to better execute projects
  • Manage and develop a team and lead through others, including performance planning, development training, goal setting to achieve department objectives
  • Develop, deploy and continuously enhance training programs that facilitate the effective and efficient onboarding of members of the contracts, legal support and sales teams

Lead implementation of new contracting processes:

  • Manage, on a continual basis, the contract pipeline from start to finish in an efficient and professional manner
  • Manage, prepare, and update standard contracts and seek guidance where needed
  • Communicate contracting process and guidelines to all stakeholders
  • Deliver contract management process training and support to clients, staff, and management
  • Advise management on contractual rights and obligations
  • Review and redline contracts directly with counterparties to ensure they accurately reflect the transaction summary and align with Company policies
  • Reconcile Company SQL database with the contract to accurately reflect finalized details of executed agreements
  • Assist operational groups in interpreting contract terms and conditions
  • Support activities related to contract management

ABOUT YOU

You have a proven track record of leading dispersed contract management teams in a fast-paced environment. You enjoy working cross-functionally to guide large volumes of commercial transactions through the negotiation process to execution. You lead your teams with a customer service mindset, ensuring accuracy, timely processing and are skilled at spotting potential issues and can creatively solve unique problems for improved results with limited oversight. In addition, candidates with the following have a great opportunity for success:

  • 8+ years of experience in energy or commodities contracting, with a knack for high volume commercial activity
  • 5 + years of demonstrated success in managing remote contracts teams of four or more individuals; expertise in acquiring a team and managing change
  • Advanced Degree (JD, MS or MBA) in specific energy/commodities contracts focus area or equivalent years of relevant experience
  • Excellent negotiation, speaking, listening, writing, interpersonal and analytical skills with acute attention to detail
  • Ability to assess risk/reward trade-offs quickly and exercise good judgment regarding when to utilize firm or pliable contract negotiation techniques
  • Experience with commercial contracting practices across domestic and international jurisdictions
  • Proven ability to build, mentor and lead a team; includes developing and delivering effective training programs for contracts and sales teams
  • Deep understanding of contractual/legal clauses and risks and the ability to research unfamiliar issues
  • Familiarity with global energy markets and the regulatory landscape affecting renewable energy and environmental commodities
  • Experience building relationships and working with industry stakeholders, such as utilities, regional power planning agencies, renewable project developers, project investors, and renewable OEMs
  • Familiarity with Lexion
  • Expertise in managing and prioritizing multiple simultaneous projects with minimal direction
  • Strong business judgment, analytical skills and the ability to persuade others

HOW WE DEFINE SUCCESS

Within 30 days

  • You will have developed a practical understanding of 3Degrees’ business, products and services and the contracting needs to support the business
  • You will have gained the fundamentals of how our contracting team engages internal /external customers in both domestic and international markets and begin to shape ideas for improvements to our approach
  • You will have started to work cross functionally across 3Degrees, engaging and establishing relationships with key stakeholders including but not limited to; Environmental Markets, Commercial and Finance

Within 90 days

  • You will be knowledgeable of 3Degrees product structure, collaboration methods, contract templates, processes and tools and have proposed valuable improvements to our approach
  • You will be have established strong internal relationships and establish a clear direction for the team

Within 6 months

  • The contract team and processes are aligned with the business needs of 3Degrees
  • The contracts team is effectively supporting and collaborating with cross functional teams and counterparties
  • Based on metrics and data, you will independently be developing strategies and framework to introduce new process steps and methodologies with a focus on continuous improvement and efficiency

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Compensation: The minimum and maximum salary for this position is $114,000 to $180,000 in the US. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include location, role requirements, relevant prior experience and/or education, or particular skills and expertise

  • Supplemental Pay: this position is eligible for discretionary bonus programs including the company’s profit sharing program and an annual individual performance bonus
