Duties
The Senior Materials Technical Reviewer serves as the leading authority and technical expert on the evaluation of sealed sources and devices (SSD) containing byproduct material and products distributed to users exempt from licensing (exempt distribution licenses, or e-licensing). Duties of the Senior Materials Technical Reviewer include:
- Performing safety evaluations of SSD-related licensing actions, performing licensing reviews for e-licensing, and conducting complex technical reviews in these areas.
- Evaluating events involving SSDs to determine whether there are any generic implications that must be communicated to other users of the sealed sources or devices.
- Proposing generic actions and resolution of regulatory issues arising in these review areas.
- Leading development of Commission policies and guidance, development of technical positions for national standards, regulatory guides, rules and regulations, and implementation of process improvements.
- Providing technical advice to the supervisor and staff and assists supervisor in distributing assignments; organizing and accomplishing work; and coaching, mentoring, and training junior technical staff.

Qualifications
In order to qualify for this position, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is experience applying the principles of nuclear safety, radiation protection, NRC regulations and guidance related to the use of byproduct material.
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:
- Broad knowledge of the principles of radiation protection and engineering relevant to the application of NRC rules, policies, procedures, and safety standards in byproduct material licensing. Extensive experience in applying this knowledge to evaluate sufficiency of license applications and make safety determinations.
- In-depth knowledge of NRC’s radiation safety requirements and regulatory processes sufficient to effectively lead and conduct SSD and e-licensing technical reviews, including using available information and risk insights to support decisions.
- Skill in independent analysis of complex technical issues and licensing problems, particularly those involving significant safety concerns, and the ability to develop and present sound technical bases upon which resolution can be reached.
- Significant experience and skill in written and oral communication to a diverse audience regarding complex technical, policy, and process matters, which includes engagement of diverse viewpoints and the ability to develop resolution to issues.

The duty location of this position is Rockville, MD. In general, employees are expected to be in the office at a minimum of 4 days per pay period**. Telework schedules, including full-time telework, are approved, on a case-by-case basis. If selected, telework will be determined in accordance with Agency policy and the Collective Bargaining Agreement, if applicable.
