The Senior Powerplant Engineer position is a part of the Global Technical Operations (GTO) Powerplant team which is responsible for technical oversight and management of Amazon’s fleet of aircraft. The Sr. Powerplant Engineer is the single-thread owner responsible for setting technical direction for engine and Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) operations, troubleshooting and maintenance across all Amazon Air carriers. Sr. Powerplant Engineer drives technical improvements for engines and APU’s to exceed the reliability goals for Amazon Air, deep dives technical barriers impacting performance goals, identifies solutions and collaborates with Carriers to implement technical improvements. The Sr. Powerplant Engineer leverages their deep technical and industry expertise in the areas of Aircraft Engine Systems, Engine Workscoping, Engine Performance and removal drivers, Engine and Component design, Life Limited Parts (LLP), component inspection and repairs and off-wing and on-wing troubleshooting to meet and exceed Amazon Air’s fleet availability goals. The Sr. Powerplant Engineer responsibilities include but not limited to supporting the execution of aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) technical requirements for Amazon Air’s global fleet, conducting scrap review and coordinating repair development efforts with engine and APU manufacturers. The Sr. Powerplant Engineer will also support technical review of new additions to the fleets. The Sr. Powerplant Engineer will apply deep technical understanding of engines and APU’s to develop maintenance strategies that reduce cost, improve reliability and deliver on customer promise of lowest delivery costs. The Sr. Powerplant Engineer will be the GTO Powerplant subject matter expert supporting engine and APU troubleshooting.
Key job responsibilities
- Responsible for overall Engine and APU reliability, maintenance initiatives (ADs, SBs, SILs and fleet campaigns), utilizing technical knowledge/experience the best interest of the fleet is managed over the full life cycle of the fleet.
- Influence maintenance providers with tactical and strategic initiatives to improve fleet level reliability performance and troubleshooting complex aircraft maintenance defects to ensure aircraft availability, increased Time on wing (TOW) and reduce unplanned engine removals (UER).
- Leverage deep subject matter expertise in engine systems, design and maintenance to develop and implement technical roadmaps for improved fleet reliability.
- Focus on strategic operational decisions to drive increased technical fleet reliability, consistently weighing business decisions against technical and operational requirements.
- Drive engine build reliability by using reliability program data and indexing to drive continuous improvements in MRO processes and workscoping content
- Effectively manage “in-service” carrier relationships – liaison with carriers to optimize in-service technical performance of the product
- Develop, manage and deliver engine/APU performance metrics, organize / chair technical reviews
- Maintain technical product line proficiency through continuous education
- Accountable for being a subject matter expert for assigned engine/APU fleets
- Travel up to 25% – 30% annually
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of technical product or program management experience
- 7+ years of working directly with engineering teams experience
- Experience managing programs across cross functional teams, building processes and coordinating release schedules
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field
- 10+ years Technical Experience in the aerospace, airline or MRO industry with systems, design and maintenance focus
- 5+ years of experience with developing maintenance workscopes for engines/APU’s at a leasing, aftermarket, airline, OEM or MRO developing and implementing engine technical improvement initiatives
- Experience with technical understanding of workscoping practices for engines or APU’s
- Deep Life Limited Parts (LLP) maintenance expertise including FAA/EASA certification and documentation requirements for LLP’s
- Experience reading and interpreting technical drawings, maintenance manuals and other technical information
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of project management disciplines including scope, schedule, budget, quality, along with risk and critical path management experience
- Experience managing projects across cross functional teams, building sustainable processes and coordinating release schedules
- Experience defining KPI’s/SLA’s used to drive multi-million dollar businesses and reporting to senior leadership
- Master’s Degree in an appropriate Engineering discipline from an accredited university
- 10+ years of experience with large category aircraft maintenance, reliability, engineering or fleet management programs
- 10+ years of experience in Airline Powerplant or OEM Engineering teams or Engine Product Support Teams.
- Airframe or Powerplant license
- Airline operational leadership experience with a 14CFR 121 or 135 operator in line maintenance, heavy maintenance or maintenance control
- Able to thrive when given high levels of autonomy and responsibility
- Experience with cargo operations and passenger to freighter conversions
- 5+ years Airline or Engine OEM design, repair, overhaul experience with life cycle ownership of engine/fleet type
- Six Sigma Black Belt and/or Lean certified
- Ability to manage and execute multiple priorities in a timely manner
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills required
- Ability to influence and drive change at all levels of the organization
- Must be highly proficient in written and oral communications in English and able to produce concise, relevant, documents and presentations for customer and senior leaders

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $119,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $231,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
