About Position:
The City of San Bernardino is seeking self-motivated and energetic individuals who have a passion for serving the community to fill multiple vacancies throughout the department.
Special Events
The incumbent in this position will be working in the City’s community centers and will assist with special events. The community center and special event staff work with a variety of individuals including youth, adults and seniors, people living with disabilities, and community organizations. The Senior Recreation Leader assists department leadership in planning, coordinating, publicizing, promoting, and scheduling a variety of recreation programs to include cultural activities, youth sports, teen activities, aquatic activities, senior citizen activities, and park-centered programs. The perfect candidate will be computer savvy, have great interpersonal skills, and considerable problem-solving skills.
Senior Nutrition Program & Senior Companion Program
The Senior Nutrition Program is looking to fill (3) positions and will require applicants to possess or have the ability to obtain their food handlers permit. The Senior Campion Program is filling (1) vacancy. Both programs will require a driver’s license as there are multiple worksites throughout the City.
The ideal candidate will be patient, assertive, and a quick learner with prior experience in recreation either paid or as a volunteer.

Essential Functions: — Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Organizes, leads, teaches, and conducts recreation activities for the City Parks and Recreation Department and Division; facilitates arts and crafts, games, team sports, dancing, drama, community singing, and informal musical activities at parks, playgrounds, and community centers.
- Assists, supports, and participates in planning, coordinating, and scheduling youth sports leagues, tournaments, shows, socials, dances, excursions, exhibits, special events and continuing programs, and a comprehensive recreation program for all ages; children’s activities such as storytelling, craft work, and other elementary organization games.
- Coaches and referees athletic games; ensures that safety precautions are observed and administers first aid; establishes and maintains strong relationships with organizations and sports groups.
- Inspects playgrounds and equipment and recommends needed maintenance and repairs; cares for or supervises the care and maintenance of playground, athletic, arts and crafts equipment and materials; attends in-service training programs.
- Confers with individuals in the neighborhood to adapt recreational programs to local needs, and to stimulate interest in planned activities; maintains records and prepares reports; supervises and instructs subordinates or volunteer staff.
- Routinely adheres to and maintains a positive attitude towards City and Department goals.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Knowledge of –
- Techniques of organizing group social, recreation, and athletic activities.
- Rules and techniques of sports, games, arts, crafts, music, drama, social, and cultural activities.
- Leadership techniques.
- First Aid methods and necessary safety precautions against physical and other hazards.
- Objectives of public recreation and methods of enlisting support.
- City policies, procedures, and standards.
Skill in –
- Organizing, facilitating, and leading a group of children or adults in recreational activities.
- Assigning and monitoring work to ensure the completion of assignments.
- Serving as an umpire or referee at athletic contests in the play program.
- Resolving minor disciplinary problems and maintain order among program participants.
- Maintaining accurate records and prepare clear concise reports.
- Developing skill in several of the sports or activities of the recreation program.
- Following oral and written instructions.
- Working effectively with other employees.
- Communicating clearly and concisely
- Establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
- Providing customer service.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma, or G.E.D. One (1) year paid experience in customer service or recreation programs or two (2) years of volunteer services in customer service or recreation programs; or a combination of training and experience
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
Possession of a valid California State Driver’s License
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions and distracting noises
Must have good hearing and visual acuity and be able to lift and move 20+ pounds.
Working conditions may include exposure to emotionally unstable individuals and require interpersonal skill and/or physical intervention to calm the individual until assistance is available. Working conditions include potential exposure to body fluids. Must have good hearing and visual acuity.

However, enrollment in the City’s deferred compensation plan is mandatory which requires an employee contribution of 7.5% of their salary per pay period.
