Responsibilities
Performs substantive editing and analysis of biomedical and scientific manuscripts written by physicians, scientists, and staff-supervised trainees at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Florida, Arizona, and Mayo Clinic Health System. Works with other members of the editorial staff (editors, manager, administrative office manager, editorial assistants, copy editors/proofreaders) to ensure that manuscripts are prepared with accuracy, clarity, and consistency of expression. Uses independent judgment to determine that reporting of data is complete and that visuals accurately convey data. Determines correct organizational structure for each manuscript and ensures that all text is appropriate for that structure, editing and rewriting text as needed. Explains and negotiates editorial changes with physician- and scientist-authors. Provides critical appraisal (documenting research designs and activities, statistical presentations, evaluating general research methods). Edits medical textbooks written by Mayo Clinic physicians and scientists for publication by major commercial biomedical publishers (rewrites, as needed). Develops and presents workshops (to Mayo staff and trainees) and selective courses (to medical students) on scientific publication and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. May also present at meetings of national professional associations, when appropriate.

This position is 100% remote work; can work from anywhere in the U.S.
Qualifications
Ph.D. in science, English, literature with experience as a scientific/medical editor, or a Master’s Degree in science, English, literature with at least five years’ of experience as a scientific/medical editor, or a Bachelor’s Degree in science, English, literature with at least ten years of experience as a scientific/medical manuscript editor. Familiarity with research methodology, statistics, and evidence-based medicine concepts. Thorough understanding of the editorial process for medical and scientific journals and the peer-review process. Exceptional command of the English language; strong writing, oral communication, and listening skills, including ability to explain and negotiate editorial changes with physician- and scientist-authors. Familiarity with copyright law and ethical standards of publication in peer-reviewed journals. Ability to edit complex scientific and medical concepts into accurate, concise, consistent text for scientific/academic audiences. Ability to prioritize projects under high-pressure deadlines. High level of interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and discretion. Keen attention to detail. Ability to work independently. Strong working knowledge of editorial and scientific references, including the American Medical Association Manual of Style, How to Report Statistics in Medicine, and Garner’s Modern American Usage.Certificate courses from the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) and/or board certifications preferred: Medical Writer Certified (Medical Writing Certification Commission); Board of Editors in the Life Sciences (BELS).See above for preferred certifications.
